Tofte campers suffer carbon monoxide poisoning
Cook County Law Enforcement received an unusual emergency call from campers along the Superior Hiking Trail at 3:43 a.m. on Saturday, August 14. Joseph Olsen, 17, of Finlayson, MN, reported that a member of his party, Mark Kenneth Bruns, of Hinckley, MN, was suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning. Full Story

Grand Marais Golf ‘n Stuff is usually the place to go for some lighthearted fun. Unfortunately, sometime during the night between August 19 and 21, the mini-golf course was the scene of theft and vandalism. Mn/DOT right-of-way clearing includes herbicide use
Contacted to confirm citizen reports of chemical spraying in the Highway 61 right-of-way in the Lutsen area, Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) spokesman Tom Jacobson said some herbicide treatment had been conducted in Cook County the week of August 12, but no treatment is taking place at this time. Preliminary results on Gunflint Trail septic inspections

Signs along highway illegal, MnDOT says
Candidates for public office are reminded that state law prohibits the placement, painting, printing or affixing of advertisements to any object within the limits of any highway in Minnesota. The Early Childhood Coalition’s Health and Wellness Fair at the Cook County Fair on Saturday, August 21 was very well-attended, with dozens of families stopping by a number of booths to learn about services for children in the community.
