Stars win Ice Cup trophy
Three local skaters helped the ‘96 Lake Superior Stars take home the Duluth Ice Cup Tournament championship trophy on Sunday, August 8. After posting a 2-0-1 record in round-robin play, the Stars entered the championship game as a clear underdog to Minnesota Legacy, who had embarrassed them 13-1 in a tournament game last May. Young Vikings hit the gridiron
The Cook County football team started practice on Monday, August 16. This year’s squad consists of 31 young men in grades 9-12. Of the 31 players on the team, 17 are either freshmen or sophomores. Despite their youth, the coaching staff is very optimistic about this year’s team. Full Story
Varsity tennis practices begin; first match set for Sept. 1
Any girls in grades 7-12 who are attending Cook County MS/HS or being home-schooled are invited to be a member of the first-year girls’ varsity tennis team this fall.
Practices and matches are being scheduled so they won’t conflict with other school sports, for those interested in participating in more than one sport. Full Story

Where are the fish biting?
According to Jon at Buck’s Hardware, there is good news on the walleye front. Jon says the walleye bite is back with fish biting in depths from 16 to 24 feet. Walleye are biting on leeches and fathead chubs. Anglers have been having luck on rock piles with a slow drift or a slip bobber. Jon has heard that walleye are biting in Hungry Jack, Crescent, Two Island, Saganaga, and Pike. Full Story
Chill in the Air
Just like that…an early taste of fall with cold, 20-mph winds this week. Monday was windy, but it was a hot wind from the south. Tuesday, it turned from the northwest and got pretty cold. The fish were scattered and hard to find. We caught walleyes in eight feet of water and we caught walleyes in 32 feet of water. Full Story

Eric Larsen sets out for Mount Everest
Grand Marais resident Eric Larsen departs August 28 for the third and final leg of his Save the Poles expedition: a quest to summit Mount Everest. The expedition would make him the first person to journey to the South Pole, North Pole and summit of Mt. Everest in a continuous 365-day period. Full Story
