Park board debates marina boat size
What should be the maximum boat size allowed in the Grand Marais marina? Members of the city's park board debated the answer to that question during their May 5 meeting. The topic was raised by board member Todd Miller, who said he did some research into the matter, and determined that the Grand Marais standards, which limit boat length to 30 feet, are "very generous. • City golf course manager Mike Kunshier reported that the course is scheduled to open May 15, but cart use may not be allowed until the ground firms up. He said there are some areas that will need to be treated for snow mold, and there was some tree damage caused by the spring ice storms, "but nothing too bad. Full Story

Weekly Weather
David Weible of Champaign, IL shared this wonderful photo of a pair of harlequin ducks. The ducks were passing through on May 12. According to birder Molly Hoffman, these ducks usually show up for a short while in spring and fall. They are uncommon but not rare. Their normal home is Alaska. David spotted them feeding along the Grand Marais harbor breakwater on both sides of the harbor mouth. Full Story

• The board received a letter from Grand Marais Mayor Sue Hakes stating the city's support for leaving county state aid roads within the city limits open to AT V use. Health Care Foundation receives hospice startup grant
Karl Hansen, director of the North Shore Health Care Foundation is pleased to announce that the Foundation has been awarded a $10,000 start-up grant from the Lloyd K. Johnson Foundation. This grant will allow the development of the proposed hospice program to continue to move forward. Full Story

Don't dump flammable items at disposal sites
Cook County Law Enforcement received a call at 1:47 p.m. on May 9, reporting a fire danger at the City of Grand Marais's brush disposal site near the Grand Marais water tower. The caller said someone had dropped hot coals next to the large slash pile. Full Story
Two Harbors considers commemoration of "Honking Tree"
For generations, motorists commemorated their journey "up north" by honking the horn as they passed the solitary pine on the expressway between Duluth and Two Harbors. Hearts were broken to see the fallen tree in the highway medium. It was cut down by unknown persons on April 30, 2009. Full Story
Grand Portage prepares for new Visitor Center
Ground will be broken in June 2009 on a new visitors center and Grand Portage State Park headquarters in Grand Portage. T. L. Construction of Floodwood, MN, the company that built the Grand Portage National Monument Heritage Center, was the low bidder for the project at $3,945,535. Full Story

Community turns out for Trout Lake fundraiser
A large group of community members turned out to support the rebuild fundraiser for Trout Lake Lodge, on May 9. Trout Lake Lodge, located on the Gunflint Trail, was destroyed by fire on April 22. Thanks to the Colvill and Maple Hill Fire Departments, the fire was contained and all cabins and other resort buildings were spared. Full Story
Mainella, 101, featured in national publication
Mildred "Millie" Mainella, 101, of Grand Marais, is well known in Cook County. She grew up in Hovland and in 1941, she married a Civilian Conservation Corps foreman, Charles "Charlie" Mainella. She and Charlie lived in Hovland for many years where he ran the store and she served as postmaster for 26 years. Full Story
Mn/DOT urges drivers to use extra caution in construction work zones
Thirty-one state highway workers and 13 contract workers who died in the line of duty since 1960 were honored on April 28, Workers Memorial Day, by the Minnesota Department of Transportation. "Each day, thousands of men and women put on their boots and hard hats and work on building and repairing Minnesota's roadway system," said Transportation Commissioner Tom Sorel. Full Story

Students learn a lot from D.A.R.E.
The 2009 Drug and Alcohol Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program held its graduation ceremony on Friday, May 8. Fifty-one students were congratulated for completing ten weeks of D.A.R.E. lessons which focus on decision-making skills, teaching ways to resist peer pressure, suggesting healthy alternatives to drug use and helping build self-esteem. The Cook County High and Middle School Band, along with the 6th grade Band will be performing their final concert of the year on Wednesday, May 20 at 7:00 p.m. in the High School Gym.
