Four more wins have Vikings at 12-2
The Cook County baseball team won four of five games last week to improve its overall season record to 12-2. After wins in Silver Bay and at home against Ely, the Vikings lost a close game on the road to Esko, 9-12. The Vikings then rebounded to beat Floodwood on the road and Duluth Marshall at home. Vikings place well in Polar Junior High Track
A 12-member contingent of the Viking Track team headed down to compete in the Polar League Junior High championships in Barnum on May 6. TheVikings were joined by the 10 other Polar League schools at this large meet. The meet started with the field events. Peter Warren threw the shot 29'10", good for sixth. Full Story

Prom and graduation celebrations may make some parents feel that they can relax the usual restrictions on alcohol use for their teens. As we near the time when these events will take place, the School Community Action Team would like to remind parents and other adults that providing alcohol to someone under 21 doesn't come cheap. Gunflint ski trails "carbon neutral"
While Nordic skiing is normally considered an eco-friendly sport, northeast Minnesota's Gunflint Nordic ski trail managers have taken this one step further. The Central and Upper Gunflint Ski Areas, connected by the Banadad Ski Trail and known collectively as the 210 kilometer Gunflint Nordic Ski System, went carbon neutral this year. Full Story
Volleyball camp offered June 15-28
Improve your volleyball skills at a special camp June 15-28 in Grand Marais. Instruction will be given on passing, hitting and serving, and there will be daily drill sessions and scrimmage games in the Varsity Gym. Thecamp is for girls going into fourth - seventh grade in the fall of 2009. Varsity players will help with the instruction. Full Story
Cook County ten-runs Babbitt in five innings
The Cook County softball team had a tough week, losing three of their four games in a busy five-day stretch of competition. On Thursday May 7, the Vikings played two back-to-back games on the road against Esko and then later in the day at Floodwood. Bears and bugs, but few fish for opener
The fishing opening weekend was not very pleasant as far as the weather was concerned, but I heard some very promising reports from the end of the Trail. Walleyes were biting great on Saturday and Sunday, but the action came to a screeching halt on Monday. This time of the year fishing is very weather dependent. Full Story

Photo courtesy of Darin Fagerman Richard "Dick" Parker of Grand Marais was recently nominated for Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Snowmobile Safety Instructor of the Year. Parker was recognized by Cook County DNR officers and area volunteers for all the hard work and effort he puts into the DNR's youth safety programs. He was one of this year's 7,500 dedicated volunteer instructors across the state. "He is the cream of the crop when it comes to dedication and commitment to the youth in our community," said DNR Conservation Officer Darin Fagerman. "We are extremely lucky to have the greatest volunteers in this state located right here in our small community." Fishing regulation changes open for comment
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is inviting public comments and suggestions about changes being considered to the recreational and commercial fishing regulations. "This is the start of the process we use to clarify and change specific portions of our fishing regulations," said Linda Erickson- Eastwood, DNR fisheries program manager. Full Story
Firearm Safety and Hunter Education, 2009
In Minnesota, anyone born after Dec. 31, 1979 must have a Firearms Safety Certificate in order to buy a license to take wild animals with a firearm. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Division of Enforcement, designed and administers a Firearms Safety Hunter Education Course to certify students. Full Story
Volunteers needed to count loons
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) nongame wildlife program is looking for volunteers in Lake and Cook counties to perform a one-day loon survey this summer. The Minnesota Loon Monitoring Program is now in its 15th year. Lake monitors are assigned to a pre-selected lake to count the number of loons they see on one morning between July 3-13. Full Story
