Photo by Bob Pranis Bob Pranis and Veronica Weadock had a delightful visitor at their bird feeder on Wednesday, May 13, a red-bellied woodpecker. Pranis talked to local birder Molly Hoffman, who said red-bellied woodpeckers are extremely rare in northeastern Minnesota. Pranis said it was amusing to watch the woodpecker, which was really too big for the feeder, as it hung upside down doing "chin-ups" to reach the food. Full Story

Many, many years ago, when I worked part-time for the Cook County News-Herald, I attended meetings of the Highway 61 Citizens Advisory Committee. The mission of the group that met monthly with Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) officials was to decide which sections of the Highway 61 corridor most needed reconstruction and enhancement. Vikings tune up for playoffs vs. Thunder Bay
The Cook County baseball team had a rare week off from Section 7A competition, so the Vikings scheduled a doubleheader with a club team from Thunder Bay on Tuesday May 12. TheThunder Bay club team is a collection of their area's best baseball players who are 19 years of age or younger. Full Story
Vikings edged out of playoffs by Floodwood
The Cook County softball season came to an end in Floodwood on Tuesday, May 19. In the first round of the Section 7A playoffs, the Vikings lost a closely contested game to the Polar Bears, 3-5. Cook County was up against Floodwood's ace sophomore pitcher, Molly Johnsen. Full Story
Tennis Block Party kicks off tennis season
The Cook County Tennis Association held its annual Cook County Tennis Block Party Saturday, May 2, at the Cook County public tennis courts. This was also part of a nationwide celebration of Tennis Month (May). Fifty participants enjoyed the fun tennis activities, free barbecue lunch, and prizes, despite some cooler temperatures.
