Forest Service describes prescribed burns

Bone marrow drive nets $700, adds 20 to registry
At the Bone Marrow Drive on May 5, the Grand Marais cohort of the Student Nursing Association from Hibbing raised over $700 for donation to the swab processing, and added over 20 people to the registry, which according to Kevin Meyer, director of the Bone Marrow Registry in Lansing Michigan, was an awesome accomplishment for such a small community. Cleanliness required for gravel crushers
Only one bid was received by the Cook County Highway Department for production of gravel in Hovland's Irish Creek pit this summer. Northland Aggregate was awarded the contract with a $30,310 bid for 7,000 cubic yards of Class 1 aggregate, well under the Highway Department's $50,000 budget. Full Story

Schroeder supports broadband, ATVs, but questions sewer district
Danna MacKenzie of the Cook County Broadband Initiative (CCBI) attended the May 12, 2009 Schroeder Township meeting to explain the significance of potential broadband internet service to Cook County. She said defining why the service is needed is difficult. "It's a little like when Boreal Access, the local internet provider, started," she said. Full Story
Federal stimulus grant could bring broadband to county
The Cook County Board of Commissioners voted Tuesday, May 19, 2009 to draft a letter of support for a grant application that would bring broadband internet capabilities to the entire county. Full Story
Sugarloaf Cove seeks trail clean up volunteers
Sugarloaf Cove will host a trail clean up and improvement event in celebration of American Hiking Society's 17th annual National Trails Day on June 7. Work begins at the Cove at 9 a.m. and continues until 4 p.m. Participants can join in at any time. Lunch will be provided for participants. Full Story
Centennial Open House at Tofte Ranger District
One hundred years ago, on Feb. 13, 1909, the Superior National Forest was designated by President Theodore Roosevelt. Schwarz hired as ISD166 superintendent
Beth Schwarz, currently director of education and licensing at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, has accepted the position of ISD 166 superintendent. She signed a three-year contract at a salary of $95,000 a year. She will officially begin July 1, 2009 but plans to make trips to Cook County before then. Full Story
