A time to remember
On Monday, May 25, the normally quiet lawn of the Cook County courthouse was crowded with community members gathered for a Memorial Day ceremony. The brief, but meaningful event was held to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country and to honor those serving the nation today. Full Story
County board approves ATV ordinance
After three years of deliberating on the issue of ATVs, the Cook County Board of Commissioners passed an ordinance outlining where and how ATVs can be used on county roads. Seventy people, mostly ATV riders as demonstrated by a show of hands, attended a hearing at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts Tuesday, May 26, 2009 that culminated in a 4-1 vote. Full Story
City to draft noise ordinance based on time, not volume
In response to ongoing complaints about the inadequacy of the existing noise ordinance, Grand Marais City Council voted May 13 to move forward with a revision, hopefully in time for the busy summer season — the time when most of the problems occur. Full Story
Thanks to my veteran
There was a really nice turnout for the Memorial Day ceremony on the lawn of the Cook County courthouse on Monday, May 25. The beginning of summer is a very busy time filled with preparation for graduation, family fishing trips, and yard projects. It was nice to see about one hundred people take time out of the busy weekend to remember our veterans. Full Story

Kieran Scannell All-Conference in Track
The CCHS track team journeyed down to Two Harbors on Wednesday, May 13 for the 11 team Polar League Track Championships. It was rainy, foggy, windy and cold in Grand Marais when we left, but sunny, 70 and breezy in Two Harbors for the meet. It almost felt like spring. Full Story
Subsection Track: End of the Season
Except Senty and Scannell
The South Subsection Track Meet, like the playoffs of most CCHS sports, represents the end of the season for most athletes. Only about 20% of the athletes move on to the Section 7A finals. Of that select group, only about 15% move on to the state meet. Only the top 3% advance to state. Full Story
Lobbying efforts payoff for tennis court
Due to enthusiastic advocacy on the part of Grand Marais resident Hal Greenwood, the Cook County Tennis Association (CCTA) has been granted $50,000 from the State of Minnesota. Thefunding will allow the nonprofit group to go forward with a major upgrade of three of the county's five courts on Community Center grounds in Grand Marais. Full Story
