Airport expansion plans zooming along
Grand Marais Cook County Airport Manager Rod Roy updated the county board Tuesday, May 26, 2009 on an expansion project that would significantly improve the airport. The purpose of the project is to allow fire-fighting planes to land in order to mitigate forest fires. Full Story

Staff photos/Rhonda Silence The mood was festive at the opening of the Fort William Historical Park - Canada Gateway Centre. Grand Marais Mayor Sue Hakes and David Parsons of Parsons Management, which is operating the Gateway Centre, welcomed Ontario Ministry of Tourism representatives, Assistant Deputy Minister Shirley Phillips and Fort William Historical Park General Manager Sergio Buonocore. The dignitaries spoke of how the shared facility will benefit communities on both sides of the border. Above: Little Olya Wright of Grand Marais wasn't sure what to think about the larger than life voyageur puppet that welcomed visitors to the grand opening. Upper right: A brigade of soldiers was on hand from Fort William Historical Park. They talked to elementary school students about their powder muskets. Middle: In addition to a wonderful lunch, there was a lot of music at the event. Bagpipers led a parade from Bear Tree Park and fiddlers provided music so the Fort William Historical Park voyageurs could dance. Lutheran learning lectures set for summer
Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Grand Marais announces a special learning event this summer, made possible with funding from the Lilly Endowment, Inc. Pastor Mark Ditmanson and Bethlehem Lutheran Church received the Clergy Renewal Grant in 2008. The grant provides funding for renewal studies for both pastor and the congregation. Full Story
Emerald ash borer not welcome
The emerald ash borer, a beetle that kills ash trees, has been found in St. Paul, and the Cook County Board of Commissioners voted Tuesday, May 26, 2009 to use all legal means possible to keep the pests from entering the county, including enacting penalties for bringing them in. Full Story
County properties now searchable by owner's name
Real estate agents and mortgage companies will be happy to find out that they can now use property owners' names to search the county website for information on private properties. Full Story
County board decides on property issues
The county board dealt with numerous private property issues Tuesday, May 26, 2009, approving one amendment to a conditional use permit (CUP) and turning another one down. Devil Track General Store (formerly Lakewind) has been operating under a CUP since it was built in 1997. Full Story
Busy summer ahead for Assessor's office
Cook County Assessor, Mary Black, has announced that the Cook County Assessor's office has identified approximately 1,200 properties to review this summer. The properties within the Unorganized Township of Range 1 West and properties in the mid-to-upper Gunflint Trail are slated for review between now and September. Full Story
County considers fire district expansion
Some property owners in the hinterlands of Cook County might be paying more in property taxes in the future, but in exchange they would be safer if their homes and cabins caught fire. Full Story
Emergency fire pump at Tofte Park nearly complete
A large part of the Tofte town meeting on Thursday, May 19 was spent discussing the finishing work for the fire department pump and pumphouse at the Tofte Park—including how to safely enclose the large hole where the pump is sitting on the lakeshore. Full Story

The Grand Marais Lions and Lioness Clubs will be holding an informational meeting regarding their activities and service to community members of Cook County. As June is membership month for Lions and Lioness, they are hoping to have new members join their group.
