Walks and trips for Senior Center
The warm sunny days to date can be counted on the fingers of one hand, but at the Senior Center we are planning as if warm weather will eventually arrive. In June we hope to be able to walk to Artists' Point on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 10:45AM. We walk from the Senior Center when the temperature is above 50 degrees. Full Story
Music and Strawberry Shortcake at Care Center
June may have arrived, but residents at North Shore Care Center patiently await warmer days and the opportunity to be outdoors again. Volunteer gardeners and staff have been busy with clean up projects and residents are starting to plant their new earth boxes. The front entrance area is looking beautiful already, too, thanks to the efforts of the Abrahamson family. Full Story

According to organizers, the Small Footprint Living Fair is not just for people wanting to make drastic changes. It's also for people who are curious about how to go about stepping in a green direction and those interested in learning about what others are doing to green their lives, their homes and their businesses. Schroeder Historical Society plans summer events
Another big event featuring the phenomenon of Highway 61's North Shore is scheduled for Sunday, June 14. Harpist Georganne Hunter will be performing a concert in two parts beginning at 1:30 p.m. Her concert is provided by a grant from the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council. At 2 p.m. the Schroeder Area Historical Society will hold its annual meeting. Full Story
Grand Portage Graduates!
The Grand Portage community celebrated the end of the school year with the Johnson O'Malley Banquet on Thursday, May 28. The event also honored two Grand Portage students graduating this year, Vallen Cook and Shannon Braford. Vallen will be attending Anoka Ramsey College in the fall. Shannon will attend Lake Superior College on a full scholarship. Full Story
Interesting professions for preschool graduates
Cook County High School seniors are not the only ones graduating this spring. Twelve class of 2009 Northshore Preschool students were launched at a ceremony in St. John's Hall Wednesday, May 20. They will be future graduates of the high school class of 2022. Full Story
Danfelt-Martin graduates with honors
Gwendolyn Danfelt- Martin has graduated from the University of Minnesota's College of Liberal Arts with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Cultural Studies and Comparative Literature, as well as with minors in Spanish and Portuguese. Full Story
Jorgenson on UW-Superior Dean's List
Anna Elise Jorgenson of Grand Marais has been named to the University of Wisconsin-Superior 2009 spring Dean's List for academic achievement. UW-Superior is Wisconsin's leading public liberal arts college, offering students academic challenge, solid career training and preparation to become lifelong learners. Full Story
Finke on Crookston Dean's List
Shanel Cherie Finke of Grand Marais has been named to the University of Minnesota, Crookston Dean's List for the spring semester. To qualify for a place on the Dean's List, students must complete 12 or more letter-graded (A-F) credits while attaining a 3.50 grade point average. Full Story

Great Expectations School (GES) was highlighted in the article Ten Schools and School Districts to Get Excited About published in educational HORIZONS, the journal of Pi Lambda Theta, an international honor society and professional association in education. Full Story
Carlson earns teacher of excellence award
Many Cook County residents were delighted to see a familiar face on the front page of the May 18 Duluth News Tribune. Under a headline of Reluctant student now teacher of excellence was Rudy "Cisco" Carlson, a 1976 graduate of Cook County High School. Full Story

Troop leader Arvis Thompson bestowing lifetime membership in the Girl Scouts to CCHS senior Cynthia Burton. Cynthia thanked Arvis for her friendship over the years. She gave examples of how Arvis has helped her, such as by offering to take her driving during the two years it took her to get her driver's license after completing driver's ed. Full Story
Student Councils clean-up on Join Hands Day
On Friday, May 8, the student councils from Silver Bay, Cook County, and Two Harbors met in Silver Bay for the annual Join Hands Day, sponsored by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Each year the event rotates among the host schools. Last year the schools met in Two Harbors and next year they will meet in Cook County. Full Story
