Council trims $40,000 from city budget
Grand Marais city councilors made a number of adjustments to the city's 2009 budget during their June 10 work session, with the majority of the changes occurring in the Recreation and Property Maintenance departments. Two representatives of ESG, the firm that installed Cook County Schools' new heating, air conditioning, and ventilation (HVAC) system, reported to the school board Monday, June 15, 2009 that the district has saved about $40,000 in heating and utility costs in the last year and a half since the new boilers were installed. County board advocating for fairness in state's share of property taxes

In addition to dealing with issues that come up locally, Cook County commissioners go to bat outside the county on behalf of this community. At the May 29, 2009 county board meeting, Commissioner Bruce Martinson updated the board on his work to keep property taxes low in the face of proposals at the state level to raise Cook County's tax rates. Emergency funding for food shelves
Lake and Cook Counties have been awarded federal funds under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program. The Arrowhead Economic Opportunity Agency (AEOA) has been chosen to receive $8,296.00 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the area. Full Story
