Special taxing district for West Rosebush Lane
"Other than fire and police protection, what do these people receive for their tax dollars?"
After considerable discussion and over the objections of County Highway Engineer Shae Kosmalski, the county board approved a motion Tuesday, June 23, 2009 to create a special taxing zone, or subordinate service district (SSD) for West Rosebush Lane off Highway 61 west of Grand Marais. At the public hearing were numerous property owners on both sides of the debate. Full Story
Board of Equalization and Appeal decides on property tax appeals
Two of the three parties who met with the Cook County Board of Appeal and Equalization June 16, 2009 did not get what they asked for when the board reconvened Tuesday, June 23. The board had met for three hours the evening of June 22 as well but was not able to complete its business until it met for a third time. Full Story
Schroeder supervisors take time to consider bond payoff

At the June 9, 2009 meeting of the Schroeder board of supervisors, Scott Harrison and Sally Nankivell of the Lutsen-Tofte Tourism Association (LTTA) asked Schroeder town supervisors Ross Willson, Catherine Johnson, and Bill McKeever to approve an amendment to a 2003 settlement agreement with the county regarding the collection and distribution of a 3% lodging tax. Oshki Ogimaag enthusiasm running high
Excitement is building in Grand Portage as staff is hired for Oshki Ogimaag, the School of New Leaders, which will open this fall as a K-6 public charter school. Cook County School District 166 closed its Grand Portage campus on the last day of school this June in order to make way for the charter school. Full Story
Squad cars to get computers

The Cook County Board of Commissioners approved a request from Sheriff Mark Falk Tuesday, June 23, 2009 to outfit Sheriff 's Department vehicles with computers. The computers will allow officers to access information from the state directly without having to go through dispatchers. Full Story

Mulfinger, architect and author of Cabinology and The Architecture of Edwin Lundie, will be presenting a talk about "cabinology" and the work of Edwin Lundie at the Cross River Heritage Center in Schroeder at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 18. This weekend marks the debut of the latest Grand Marais Playhouse production, The Final Twist by Ken Whitmore and Alfred Bradley. Progress on Gitchi Gami Bike Trail
Officials from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and Department of Transportation (MnDOT) were at Lutsen Resort on Monday, June 22, 2009 with a large map of the Gitchi Gami State Trail showing which sections of the bicycle trail are completed; which are under construction; which are in the design phase; and which have yet to be started.
