Drake plays in Minnesota's All-Star Football Game
This past weekend on June 27, 80 of the best football players in the state competed in the 36th annual Minnesota High School All-Star Football Game. Cook County's Miles Drake was selected to play in the game for the Outstate team as a strong side defensive back. Despite the Metro team winning 54-13, the game was exciting to watch for everyone. Power Lifting
Upper Shore Fitness members Barry Shaw, Seth Falk, and Cory Pederson recently competed in the Twin Ports Raw [no supportive gear] power lifting competition in Duluth. Power lifting consists of three lifts—the squat, the bench press, and the dead lift. Barry set national records in his weight and age class in the total of all three lifts—1353 pounds and in the squat with a lift of 512.6 pounds. He also earned second place meet trophies in the Masters and Open Men's lightweight. He was beat by a national champion. Seth and Cory were competing for their first time with Seth finishing in third place in the Junior age 23 and under] class with a total of 1182.5 pounds. Cory also did an excellent job in his weight class, with only about three weeks of power lifting practice—852.5 lbs. Congratulations to the Cook County power lifters! Full Story

Dig it! Students from Ann Russ' fifth grade science classes combined lessons on Cook County soils with artwork for the 2009 Soil & Water Poster Contest. This year's theme was Dig It! The Secrets of Soil. Receiving $50 savings bonds are Sean MacDonell, first place (son of Grace and Tim), Roman Schnobrich, second place (son of Monica and Randy), and Joseph Rauzi, third place (son of Kelly and Chris). Lots of July activities at Care Center
Summer officially arrived at North Shore Care Center with the annual solstice jazz concert on June 20. Thisyear the Tuxedo Jazz Quartet performed on the patio while everyone sipped cold fruity beverages. It was a hot day with some hot jazz by musicians Liz Sivertson, John Gruber, Pete Cavanaugh, and Nathan Baker. Residents, families, and staff really loved it. Full Story
Musical medical students at Care Center
Two St. Scholastica medical students recently completed their clinical studies at Cook County North Shore Hospital and Care Center. Before leaving for the next stage of their training, they offered a concert of Irish music at the Care Center on Friday, June 26. Full Story
St. Scholastica hosts "A Day at College" for area seniors
No degrees or formal education are required for seniors wishing to attend "A Day at College" Aug. 27 in Duluth. The College of St. Scholastica's Emeritus College has organized the event for area senior citizens for a cost of $15, which includes all sessions and lunch. Full Story
Nelms receives Chancellor's Award from UW
Nicole Nelms of Hovland has received the Chancellor's Award for the spring 2009 semester at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. The award is presented to students who have a grade point average of 3.5 or above. Nicole is the daughter of Eric and Dusty Nelms of Hovland, and is a 2005 Cook County High School graduate. Sommer Smith of Grand Marais has been named to the spring 2009 dean's list at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul. Sommer is a 2008 graduate of Cook County High School. She is the daughter of Scott Smith and Kristine Barton of Grand Marais. Full Story

Gun transport no longer requires case
Starting July 1, a hunter will no longer need to have his or her firearm in a case while driving a motor vehicle. Thenew law applies to crossbows, rifles and shotguns only—handguns must still be in a case. This change in the law will be included in the 2009 Hunting and Trapping Regulations booklet, which will be available in August. Full Story

In June 2009 in McGrath, Alaska, two firefighters, who had not previously met, learned they had a common tie. Cal Maki (left) of Palmer, AK and Paul Beberg of Fairbanks, AK are both former residents of Grand Marais. They met during a "fire bust," in which they responded to several lightning strike fires. Maki works at the Mat-Su Forestry Office in Palmer and was on assignment as the helicopter manager for N398EH, pictured in the background. He is the son of MN DNR Ranger Bob Maki of Grand Marais. Beberg works in Fairbanks at the State of Alaska Logistics Center and was on assignment as the supervisory dispatcher. He is the son of Chuck and Jan Beberg, also former residents of Grand Marais.
