Canoe the Heart expedition stopping for celebration at Chik-Wauk

Fiber arts show a treat for the senses
A giant quilt by local artisan Ray Comstock greeted visitors to the opening of the Northwoods Fiber Guild show at Johnson Heritage Post the evening of Friday, June 26, 2009. A large crowd of people milled around enjoying that and other quilts, hand-dyed batiks, colorful braided rugs, and woolen knitwear made by members of the guild. Full Story

Log rolling is back!
It is log rolling season again and time to start "spinning the cedar" before Fisherman's Picnic! World champion log roller Jenny Atkinson is offering free classes and a tournament. The local youth tournament presented by the Grand Marais Lions Club, WoodMizer and Central Boiler will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1 during Fisherman's Picnic. Full Story
WTIP fundraising begins July 15
North Shore community radio station WTIP begins its on air "Catch the Waves" Membership Drive on Wednesday, July 15. Station Manager Deb Benedict said, "The drive will continue for 5.5 days to raise a minimum of $22,000 to 'keep on surfing' this year. Full Story
Fishing Museum raffle announced
The North Shore Commercial Fishing Museum will host a fundraising raffle on Aug. 10. Tickets are $2, and may be purchased at the museum or by calling (218) 663-7050. The winners need not be present. Full Story
Grand Marais Celebrates Independence Day!
The crowd was huge and expectant as the 2009 Fourth of July parade rolled through downtown Grand Marais, kids with outstretched arms hoping candy would be thrown their way. Making up for its small size, the parade went through town twice, as any good small-town parade would do. Full Story

I was unable to attend Irv Benson's Memorial, but I was told on good authority that it was a wonderful event. Over 150 people were in attendance and the weather even cooperated for a day. The high winds have made the fishing a challenge. I like a walleye chop, but too much wind is dangerous and restricting. Full Story

Where are the fish biting?
According to Tyson at the Beaver House, walleye fishing has slowed significantly because mayflies are out. However, he said some fishermen have been having luck with leeches on spin-floats and Beaver Flicks. Tyson added that top water lures and torpedos are working for bass. Full Story
