County supports broadband initiative
The Cook County commissioners threw their support behind a local broadband initiative Tuesday when they unanimously agreed to help the $40+ million project move forward with a fall referendum and a promise that if voters approve it, the telecommunications project will be among those on the list for funding. Forest Service fights small fires in Lutsen, Grand Marais
The US Forest Service was dispatched to two fires last week, in Lutsen and Grand Marais. Both were fortunately extinguished before causing significant damage. The first fire was spotted on July 8 by a hiker from Hayward, Wisconsin, John Leighton. He and his wife were at an overlook on the Superior Hiking Trail near Agnes Lake when they spotted a large tree on fire. Full Story
House fire offers fire fighting training
A house burned to its foundation in Grand Marais on Saturday, July 11, but it was not a loss. In fact, the fire provided invaluable training for firefighters. The fire was a training exercise conducted by the Grand Marais Volunteer Fire Department and instructors from the Mesabi Range Community & Technical College. Full Story
Angler dies at Lutsen lake
Robert "Bob" Willard Cain, 74, of Wabasha, MN, died after the boat he was fishing from capsized on White Pine Lake in Lutsen. Cook County Law Enforcement received a 911 call from Robert Cain's nephew, Curtis Cain, 50, of Eyota, MN at 6:33 p.m. on July 9. Curtis Cain reported that he was fishing on White Pine Lake with Earl Cain of Lutsen and Robert Cain. Full Story
