Young boat builder David Hansen
David Hansen, 14, of Lutsen has accomplished something many grown men only dream of. With the help of his uncle, Neil Hansen, he has built his own seaworthy vessel, a Barnegat Bay Sneakbox. Neil Hansen said David got the idea of building a boat after seeing an old hydroplane at the family's Caribou Lake cabin. "He said, 'Maybe we could build one,'" said Neil. Full Story
Tennis tournament will go on despite construction
The Grand Marais Fisherman's Picnic Tennis Tournament will begin Wednesday, July 29 at the high school tennis courts and continue through Sunday, Aug. 2. Due to court reconstruction there are only two courts available this year. Consequently, the adult tournament will be doubles only. There will be consolation matches as court availability permits. Two Grand Marais residents, Kaari Dahlman and Hannah Laky, have been named to the 2009 spring semester dean's list at Bethel University in St. Paul. Kaari is the daughter of Bruce and Kate Dahlman. Grand Marais was busy the weekend of July 11 during the 2009 Arts Festival sponsored by the Grand Marais Art Colony. The sun shone and high winds brought in fluffy white clouds, requiring the rows of white tents to be braced with buckets of rocks from the beach. Full Story

Where are the fish biting?
Walleye Releases According to Buck's Hardware, fishermen have had success with walleyes on Saganaga and Seagull Lakes in 8 to 15 feet of water, drifting with Lindy Rigs and leech. At Crescent Lake they have been biting in 20 to 23 feet of water with jig and minnow. Devil Fish Lake walleyes are hitting at 15 to 18 feet of water with jig and minnow and drifting leeches. Superior Hiking Trail events planned
Hikers are invited to participate in summer hikes with the Superior Hiking Trail Association. The next hike is Gooseberry Falls State Park to Split Rock River wayside on Aug. 22.
