Vandals tip trailer at gravel pit
Vandals tampered with heavy equipment creating havoc at the Cross River gravel pit on the Gunflint Trail sometime during the night of Thursday, July 9. A front-end loader belonging to Edwin E. Thoreson, Inc. was used to tip over a 40,000-pound tag trailer belonging to Dave Tuttle. Full Story
Serious accident in Hovland
A serious single vehicle accident occurred at mile marker 133 on Highway 61 in Hovland at 12:14 p.m. on Sunday, July 12. Shyam Prasaad Samudravijayn, 33, India, was driving a 2000 Toyota Corolla southbound on Highway 61 and attempted to pass a pick-up truck. After pulling out to pass, he saw a motorcycle traveling northbound and swerved to get back in his lane. Full Story

This American Redstart has been dubbed "Crazy Bird" by Sara Silence and the children at KinderTots Daycare. For the second year he has spent several days fluttering around a patio window as if he wants inside. Local birder Molly Hoffman explains that the Redstart is a warbler and is very territorial. He is most likely defending his territory from a potential rival (his own reflection!) Hoffman said once the Redstart fledglings leave the nest the seemingly erratic behavior would most likely stop. Proposed hospice program has a coordinator
The development of the Hospice/ Palliative Care Program for Cook County has taken a positive step forward. As a result of a grant awarded by the Lloyd K. Johnson Foundation, Kay Grindland has been hired as the part-time coordinator of the program. She will serve as the initial contact for those wanting more information about the program and end-of-life care services. Full Story

City council puts noise ordinance in the book
It's official. Grand Marais city councilors passed the second reading of a revised noise ordinance by a 4-1 vote July 8, making it legal for outdoor performers to play amplified music until midnight on weekends, and until 10 p.m. during the rest of the week. Full Story

Naturalist Lynnae Fischbach will present Earthworks at Sugarloaf Cove Nature Center at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 25. Lynnae will discuss the history of the Earthworks movement. What is Earthworks?
