Although there was choppy water and threatening skies, the 2009 Gunflint Canoe Races were a huge success, raising over $14,000 for the Gunflint Trail Volunteer Fire Department. Cook County High School seniors Cedric Holtz, Gavin Danfelt-Martin and Martha Wilkes will be heading south in August to spend their final year of high school abroad. Summer naturalist programs offered at Sugarloaf Cove

Sugarloaf: The North Shore Stewardship Association will offer daily naturalist programs this summer. Programs are free of charge and will run Thursday through Monday at 10 a.m. or 2 p.m. Full Story

Walleye Releases Where are the fish biting? Walleyes have been caught in several local lakes. You may find success on Northern Light Lake in 8 - 12 feet, trolling with Lindy Rigs and minnows along the weed line, nice and slow. Flour Lake has seen walleyes deeper at 20 - 25 feet with a minnow. Flour Lake anglers say look for rock piles. Full Story

Large congregations of geese can affect Minnesota's waters. Most of us enjoy watching geese flying overhead or swimming in the water. Watching a couple of geese wander onto the shore is entertaining, but many geese on the shore of a lake, river, or wetland is not so pleasant. Full Story
