Citizen of the Year award ending its fourth decade
In 1971, the Grand Marais Lions Club named its first Citizen of the Year, Olga Soderberg, starting a long tradition of recognizing area citizens and senior citizens for their many contributions to the community. Full Story

Slip Slidin' Away!
From near and far, folks travel to the Grand Marais Lions Fisherman's Picnic Fish Toss Contest. The winning fish tosses have been about 70 feet. Donut Bingo Friday!
World's Best Donuts on Wisconsin Street in downtown Grand Marais, is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. The small donut shop started by Marieta Altrichter and her daughters 40 years ago has grown to a family business and North Shore landmark. And the "Donut Shop" usually offers some entertainment for the Fisherman's Picnic. Full Story

World of lumberjack sports at Fisherman's
The world of lumberjack sports will again converge on Grand Marais during the Fisherman's Picnic. Join in the fun at the Grand Marais Lions' Lumber Camp presented by Wood-Mizer and Central Boiler. During the four-day event, the lumber camp will have three exhibitions daily. Full Story

Central Boiler outdoor furnaces have joined the Fisherman's Picnic Lumber Camp this year and things are heating up! Niel Atkinson, coordinator of Lumber Camp activities said, "The world's largest and most successful outdoor boiler company will be on site to help you learn how to heat with renewable resources and save thousands of dollars on your heating bill. Chainsaw for champion from Husqvarna & Steve's Sports
Friday night July 31st at 7:00 p.m. the Fisherman's Picnic Lumber Camp is the place to be! Watch professional sawyers square off with Husqvarna 576XP chainsaws in a stock saw contest. This will be head-to-head competition with these huge saws ripping through 20-inch lathe turned white pine straight from the Lumberjack World Championships in Hayward, Wisconsin. Full Story
Wood-Mizer makes Ham Lake fire white pine into boards
Wood-Mizer, the world's largest manufacture of portable band sawmills is happy to be a part of Fisherman's Picnic again and will be offering sawmill demonstrations Thursday, Friday and Saturday. On site demos will focus on the simple and safe nature of the Wood- Mizer sawmill operation. Full Story
Old Timers vs. Viking girls
2009 marks the 21st year of the Old Timers fast pitch softball game at Fisherman's Picnic. The original format of this game featured old timers, i.e. 40 years in age or over from Cook County, playing their counterparts from Lake County. In recent years, Lake County was unable to field a team so the game was changed. Full Story

It's Fisherman's Picnic and for local readers that means it's time for the annual Library Friends' book sale. The sight of long lines of people waiting to enter the Cook County Community Center on Thursday evening and Friday morning gladdens the hearts of Library Friends member workers. Full Story
