Hospital board discusses possibilities
The days of traveling to Duluth for an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) might be over. At the Thursday, July 16, 2009 meeting of the Cook County North Shore Hospital board, Administrator Diane Pearson reported that she is talking to a radiology supply company about getting a mobile van to come up twice a month. Four treated following Sunday crash at Seagull Guard Station
Four persons were taken to the Cook County North Shore Hospital following a Sunday afternoon accident on the Gunflint Trail. The Cook County Sheriff 's Office was notified of the onevehicle crash at 2:04 p.m. July 18 when a Forest Service employee called 911 and reported the accident at 11456 Gunflint Trail, in front of the Seagull Guard Station. Rec. Park Master Plan ready for review
The Grand Marais Park Board has been meeting with the public and working with Carduus Consulting for months and has developed a final Recreation Park Master Plan for the public to review and comment on. The final public forum will be held Tuesday, July 28 at 7:00 p.m. in the Recreation Hall at the campground (just south of the pool). Full Story

Art Colony Director is replaced
On July 20, the Grand Marais Art Colony announced the resignation of Director Don Hammer. Art Colony Board Member David Hahn said Hammer had been replaced by Amy Demmer. Hammer was hired in fall of 2008. Full Story
Grand Portage woman injured at Rock Cut
A Grand Portage woman was taken to the Cook County North Shore Hospital July 17 after her vehicle veered off Highway 61 and crashed near the Rock Cut. The accident was reported to 911 at 4:14 p.m. by a driver who saw the vehicle behind his leave the road. Full Story
County roads to get durable striping
Cook County will be getting a good deal on road striping and sealing this summer. Bill Parish of the Cook County Highway Department asked the county board Tuesday, July 21, 2009 to approve awarding a contract to AAA Striping of Rogers, Minnesota, which submitted the lower of two bids. Full Story

Just prior to the inauguration of President Obama I saw a young (twenty or thirty something) African American woman interviewed on PBS and she spoke of living in the "Post Racial" period in the US. Post Racial? I heard another interviewee allude to the election of Mr. Obama as "turning the page" on racism in this country. I guess I do not see it that way. Full Story
Hospital board discusses its place in biomass possibilities
During the last year, Cook County North Shore Hospital has been the subject of numerous conversations regarding public buildings that could benefit from cheaper, cleaner sources of energy. Superior National Forest welcomes new Deputy Supervisor
On July, Mark Hummel joined the leadership team on the Superior National Forest. As the Deputy Forest Supervisor, Hummel will assist with overall management of programs across the three-million acre Forest. During his career, Hummel has worked on various national forests. Full Story

Just before the start of the monthly Tofte town board meeting Thursday, July 9, 2009, the Tofte Design Review Committee met to consider a request from the county's Planning and Zoning Department. Full Story
North Shore Federal Credit Union approved as SBA lender
The U.S. Small Business Administration has announced that North Shore Federal Credit Union (Silver Bay, Lutsen and Grand Marais) has been approved as an SBA lender. Dale Klobuchar of the Grand Marais branch of the credit union is pleased to have another tool to assist customers. Full Story
Schroeder votes to withdraw from sanitary sewer tax district
Schroeder town supervisors Catherine Johnson and Ross Willson passed a motion Tuesday, July 14, 2009 to pursue withdrawal from the Tofte-Schroeder Sanitary Sewer District (TSSSD) and voted to consult an attorney to help them through the process. Supervisor Bill McKeever was not at the meeting. Full Story
Bakk receives 'Legislator of Distinction' Award
State Sen. Tom Bakk, DFL-Cook, was presented with the 2009 League of Minnesota Cities Legislator of Distinction Award. Bakk was recognized for his leadership in crafting the 2009 Omnibus Tax Bill that would have preserved the state-local fiscal partnership to meet the needs of rural, suburban, and urban main streets across Minnesota. Master Gardeners give Playhouse supporters something to enjoy outside
The Master Gardeners have struck again. A garden outside the Arrowhead Center for the Arts that had suffered from heavy traffic has now been raised off the ground and replanted with a variety of long-lasting plants. Emma Bradley, a Grand Marais Playhouse volunteer and a Master Gardener, spearheaded the project, according to Playhouse director Sue Hennessy. Full Story
Cam Sjoberg took a break for a lunch at the Como Oil & Propane Customer Appreciation Day in Grand Marais on Wednesday, July 8. Tofte names second Citizen of the Year
John Nelson was named Tofte Citizen of the Year on July 4, 2009. He was the second person to be named since the award was begun last year with Bob Boomgard receiving the honor by committee vote. When Tofte town supervisor Paul James was asked about how John Nelson was named, he launched into a list of many things Nelson has done to benefit the community. Full Story

The West End Garden Club theme was Floral Hit Parade and gardeners were very creative finding ways to use flowers to represent his or her favorite song. Grand Marais Garden Club still flourishing after 75 years
With summertime flowers in full bloom, the Grand Marais Garden Club celebrated 75 years of community beautification at its annual flower show Friday, July 17, 2009 at the Community Center. It all started with nineteen ladies who met at the Cook County Courthouse in April 1934 to talk about how to beautify Grand Marais. Full Story
