Kevin Robert Thompson, 52, of Grand Marais is facing multiple charges after allegedly imprisoning and terrorizing his wife and a Grand Marais man for more than eight hours on May 15, 2009. Lake Superior water access in Hovland temporarily closed
Anglers or pleasure boaters who like to head out onto Lake Superior from Horseshoe Bay in Hovland will have to travel to another water access until sometime in fall 2009 as the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources completes a construction project. Full Story
Sobanja pleads guilty to one driving violation
Three of the four charges against Frederick Rudolph Sobanja, 60, of Creechville Road in Grand Marais, were dismissed on July 21, when Sobanja pled guilty to one petty misdemeanor charge of following a fire truck closer than 500 feet. Full Story
Heil Smith charged with theft
Kimberly Ann Heil Smith, 43, of Grand Marais has been charged with eight counts of theft by false representation, having allegedly written $100,969.90 in unauthorized checks during her tenure as treasurer of local real estate firm, Gunflint Realty. Full Story

Amidst a bidding war, the ISD 166 school board voted Tuesday, July 28, 2009 to sell its bus garage at the Birch Grove Community Center. The unheated, uninsulated garage had been on the market for $37,000 and had three offers, two of them over the asking price, according to listing real estate agent Terry Backlund. Full Story

A rise in the price of oil may have contributed to a Cook County Highway Department resurfacing bid coming in $484,952.10 over Highway Engineer Shae Kosmalski's estimate, according to county engineering technician Bill Parish. He obtained approval from the county board Tuesday, July 28, 2009 to award the bid to Ulland Brothers Inc., the lowest bidder. Full Story

In June 2009, the Cook County Food Shelf served 80 households — up from other months. Would you like to help out? The Cook County Food Shelf could also use a few more volunteers.
