Teenagers injured in ATV accident
Two teenagers from White Bear Lake, MN, were injured in an all-terrain vehicle accident on Friday, July 31, 2009 on Bent's Road in Grand Marais. The injured teens—a 14-year-old female driver and 17-year-old male passenger were taken to Cook County North Shore Hospital by private vehicle. Full Story
1% tax proponents pitch their projects

» In the August 1, 2009 article Heil Smith charged with theft, it was reported that there was a discrepancy in the Gunflint Realty company trust account. Although that information was in the initial police report, that is incorrect. The Minnesota Department of Health has released a report that lists where Cook County residents received hospital inpatient care in 2006. According to Cook County North Shore Hospital Administrator Diane Pearson, hospital statistics can be difficult to find because competing hospitals often do not want to release information that could benefit their competitors. Thompson Performance seeks rezoning, hopes to avoid criminal charges
Brad Thompson, owner of Thompson Performance in Grand Marais, will appear before the Cook County Planning Commission on Wednesday, August 12, 2009, requesting a zoning change for his 1.4 acre property in Grand Marais—in hopes of avoiding criminal prosecution for continuing the small engine repair business he has operated at the site for 21 years. State releases latest population statistics
The total population of Cook County in 2008 was 5,437, according to Minnesota State Demographic Center statistics released July 15, 2009. The county contains 57 group quarters (all in Grand Marais) and 2,578 households, with an average of 2.09 people per household. Full Story
Council reviews capital improvement plan
In keeping with their goal of preparing a citywide Capital Improvement Plan, Grand Marais city councilors met July 29 to discuss a list of projects prepared by City Administrator Mike Roth. Herbicide treatment on roadsides, power lines
Spraying of herbicides for vegetation management on electrical power lines by Great River Energy (GRE) began in Cook County in July and finished up last week. GRE treated its 70 - 100 foot wide transmission line right-ofway from Taconite Harbor in Schroeder to the Maple Hill area. Full Story
