Comments sought on South Fowl Snowmobile Access again
The US Forest Service is once again accepting comments on a proposed reroute of a 2 ½-mile snowmobile trail between McFarland and South Fowl Lakes in Hovland. The reroute has been the focus of public scrutiny since the Forest Service closed a trail that had been determined to be partially in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) in 2002. Schroeder wants accountability from LTTA
County Commissioner Bruce Martinson told the Schroeder town board Tuesday, August 11, 2009 that Tofte representatives had met with Lutsen-Tofte Tourism Association (LTTA) representatives the day before. The Tofte representatives "weren't too happy with LTTA's position," Martinson said. Full Story
County awards County Road 6 contract
At its Tuesday, August 18 meeting, the county board awarded a County Road 6 contract to the lowest bidder, KGM Contractors. Thework will include ditch repair, aggregate surfacing, bituminous surfacing and culvert replacement on the bottom .6 miles of County Road 6. KGM's bid, $193,046.98, was 6.06% under the county engineer's estimate. Full Story
Hospital considers trends in long-term care
After listening to a Thursday, August 20, 2009 presentation from Tom Kooiman of Pope Associates, an architectural firm specializing in health and long-term care facilities and senior housing, the North Shore Hospital board voted to pursue a feasibility study on alternatives to the Care Center's current operating model. Thestudy is expected to cost about $3,500. Full Story
County agreeable to funding request from Gunflint Fire Department
Gunflint Trail volunteer firefighter Rick Johnson asked the county board on Tuesday, August 25, 2009 to designate $50,000 from Title III Secure Rural Schools (SRS) funding for communication upgrades for the Gunflint Trail Fire Department. The department has been making numerous capital improvements over the last year, Johnson said. Full Story
Lutsen supports cemetery expansion
The Lutsen Fire Department moved two of its fire trucks out of the fire hall on Tuesday, August 18 so the August Township meeting, a continuation of the March annual meeting, could be held there. Almost 50 citizens turned out for the meeting, which focused primarily on the future of the Lutsen Cemetery. Full Story

The North Shore Hospital Auxiliary has a long history of answering needs for the North Shore Hospital and Care Center. The auxiliary was in existence a year before the hospital itself and members helped bring quality health care to Cook County. Full Story
Cook County Fair 2009 sees entries from young and old
With entrants ranging in age from 18 months to 100-plus years, the Cook County Fair was deemed a success by all who attended. There were 71 exhibitors entering 505 items, up slightly from last year's 496. The Fair Board awarded $1,100.50 in prizes and ribbons. Full Story

The photography of Larry and Linda Dunlap will be on display at the Cross River Heritage Center (CRHC) in Schroeder until October 3, 2009. The Dunlaps live in Northwestern Wisconsin near Pattison Park. They have been working in photography since 1968. Full Story
Bush Artist Program sets information meetings
The Bush Artist Program will host 11 information meetings for artists interested in applying for a Bush Artist fellowship or a Dakota Creative Connections grant.
