Sentence-to-Serve program brings benefits to county
The Sentence-to-Serve program provided 936 hours of adult labor between April and June of this year. The estimated market value of completed projects was $13,250. Eighty-four jail days were saved by allowing offenders to work instead of sit in jail. Full Story
Hospital project gets "Yes" vote in all precincts; totals 560 to 188
For the second time in two years, the voters in this county have authorized a hospital for Cook County. The vote Tuesday was 560 yes to 188 no. Thevote two years ago was found invalid and a new election was necessary. The total vote cast in the first election was 838; in the second 748. Full Story

Are you troubled someone's drinking?
Twenty questions developed by Al-Anon can help family members identify whether they have been affected by a loved one's drinking, according to Nicolette Stephens, Information Analyst for Al-Anon. "While it is easy to see what alcohol does to the drinker, it may be difficultto see its effects on those who care about the drinker," Stephens said. Full Story
City council approves $1.2 million assessment roll
Following deliberation and some adjustment, Grand Marais city councilors approved $1.2 million in special assessments at their Aug. 26 meeting. Themoney is needed to pay for street and utility improvements that were begun last year and are now nearing completion. Full Story
North Shore Hospital votes for levy increase
July brought a profit of $231,966 to Cook County North Shore Hospital, said Controller Yvonne Gennrich at the Thursday, August 20 hospital board meeting, but the year to date loss is $91,033. The numbers change as Medicare makes adjustments, so knowing ahead of time what the financial picture will be at the end of the year is almost impossible. Full Story

Busy summer leads to busy fall at Care Center!
Summer went by quickly for residents at North Shore Care Center. Like everyone else, we had to work around the weather to be outdoors for picnics, luaus, live music, and other activities. Fisherman's Picnic was a fun-filled weekend for residents with lots of family around. Fish burgers ware donated by the Larry Larsen family. Full Story
School Board sets district goals

David Hahn offers classes at Cross River
Cross River Heritage Center will host drawing and watercolor classes with David Hahn on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 12 from noon to 4 p.m. Cost is $20 each day. Full Story
Kids' gardening program begins September 15
Local youths, third grade and up, are invited to join the after-school kids' gardening program on Wednesdays from 3:15 to 5:15 p.m. at the Cook County Community Center from September 15 through October 14. Full Story
Cook County Schools open house on September 17
In what has become a back-to-school tradition, Cook County Schools (ISD 166) invites the community to an open house on Thursday, September 17 from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. Parents and other community members are invited to tour the campus, visit classrooms, and meet the ISD 166 teachers.
