Lightning strike fires are more common than Northland residents may think. This burned white pine was discovered by Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Forester Bob Maki when he was making a visit to a timber sale near Thompson Lake in Grand Marais. Full Story

U.S. Border Patrol arrests suspected smuggler at Grand Portage
U.S. Border Patrol agents arrested a suspected smuggler on Wednesday, Sept. 9, after agents from the Grand Marais Station, Grand Forks Sector, were contacted by the Grand Portage Pigeon River Port of Entry concerning several suspicious persons exiting a vehicle near the Grand Portage State Park. Lots happening at Birch Grove Community Center
At the Thursday, September 10 meeting of the Tofte town board, Supervisor D.C. Olsen reported, "There's a lot going on at Birch Grove." The Birch Grove Community School has 40 K-5 students and 12 preschoolers, and the new pellet boiler is ready to go when the weather turns cold. Full Story
County helps EDA make it to the end of the year
The Cook County - Grand Marais Economic Development Authority (EDA) has facilitated improvements and energy efficiency upgrades to 14 homes, with eight more in the works, as well as upgrades to Superior National at Lutsen golf course, but it continues to face crippling legal expenses and debt related to Cedar Grove Business Park. 3 percent levy increase in 2010 city budget
Grand Marais taxpayers will see a 3 percent levy increase next year unless city council makes further cuts to its proposed 2010 budget before the end of the year. Councilors approved a preliminary maximum levy total of $802,657, including a general revenue levy of $601,802 at their Sept. 9 meeting. Full Story
Energy law leaves Forest Service resources out of the picture
A growing number of state and federal laws seek to decrease reliance on fossil fuels while promoting ecological health. One of Cook County's largest natural resources is its forestland. Both the language of laws already in place and laws that are being proposed are likely to impact how that resource can be tapped. Full Story
Hansen named chair of Northland Foundation
Cindy Hansen of Tofte, currently serving her eighth year on the board of the Northland Foundation, has been appointed as chair of the foundation board for 2009-2010. Hansen said she is delighted to serve as chair, explaining, "This is the best organization I've ever dealt with. Full Story

The Grand Marais Lions and Lioness clubs relaxed and took a deep breath after the busy summer during the Lion's Steak Fry on Tuesday, August 25th at the Gunflint Hills Golf Course in Grand Marais. Isle Royale Artist-in-Residence: A call for entries
Applications are now being accepted for Isle Royale National Park's 2010 Artist-in-Residence Program, Phyllis Green, park superintendent recently announced. North Shore Health Care Foundation Tournament fees reduced
Due to the economy and the times, the North Shore Health Care Foundation annual golf tournament numbers are down. So, for this year, the foundation board is lowering the registration fee from $125.00 to $90.00 and refunding the $35.00 to anyone already registered.
