Oil spill response in Grand Portage
On Tuesday and Wednesday, September 15-16, members of the US and Canadian Coast Guard, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, and the Cook County Sheriff ’s Response Unit responded to an emergency in Grand Portage Bay. On September 15, 2009, Cook County Attorney Tim Scannell and Minnesota Attorney General Lori Swanson were notified that the Minnesota Court of Appeals had “reversed and remanded” the conviction of James Lee Curtis of Grand Marais. Tennis Association celebrates grand opening of new courts
Cook County Tennis Association (CCTA) President Gene Glader welcomed about 70 people to a dedication of the new Cook County tennis courts on the west side of the high school Saturday, September 19, 2009. Over $250,000 has been raised toward the project over the last four years. “It’s been a great cooperation between a nonprofit and a government entity,” Glader said. Full Story

October activities at Care Center
The residents at North Shore Care Center welcomed autumn with a leaf tour up the Gunflint Trail and along the shore in Croftville. The day was sunny and warm enough to enjoy Dairy Queen treats on the patio when we returned. Other outings this month will be to the Harvest Dinner at Bethlehem Lutheran Church and a “Mystery Trip” somewhere in the county. Full Story

Irene and Gene Malner moved back to Grand Marais and rejoined the Lioness and Lions Clubs in 2008. Although Grand Marais winters are considered by most to be long and harsh, they both know what a blessing it is to breathe fresh air, live within the pristine boreal forest, and to rekindle old friendships. Nursing Assistant and Home Health training in October
The North Shore Care Center in Grand Marais, in collaboration with Lake Superior College, will be offering the Nursing Assistant & Home Health Aide training course beginning Thursday, Oct. 8. The classes, taught by instructor Mark Abrahamson, will meet from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and every other Saturday beginning Oct. 10 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Full Story

Come to the movies on the first Saturday morning and first Monday evening of each month in the Arrowhead Center for the Arts (ACA) auditorium. There is a suggested $2 donation to help cover expenses.
