Thebird is back.
Description: Five feet tall, two feet wide at the hips, about an inch thick. White with a little gray on the wings. Yellow beak. Proud demeanor.
Thanks to the savvy social skills of Pine County Deputy Daniel Kunz, the bird is back. Kunz has a way with prisoners, and that is what opened the case wide. Full Story
Suspect arrested in Grand Portage Trading Post robbery
On Thursday, October 1, 2009, cashiers at the casino window of the Grand Portage Trading Post were victims of an armed robbery. Edwin Olaf Vick, 73 of Lutsen, has been arrested in the Twin Cities for probable cause related to the robbery. Full Story
Council approves park master plan

At press time I am frantically preparing for a weekend get-away. I am heading to Cross Lake, MN with my daughter-in-law, Sara, and friend, Judy. Sara and Judy are obsessive scrapbook compilers. Two more wins for Viking volleyball
The Viking volleyball team added two more wins to its record with a road win against the McGregor Mercs on September 29 and a big home win on October 1 against the Cromwell Cardinals, bringing their record to 8-2 in the conference and 11-4 overall. Full Story
Foundation Golf Tournament 2009
A mix of traditions and changes greeted golfers at this year’s North Shore Health Care Foundation annual golf tournament on Sunday, October 5, at Superior National in Lutsen.
The bright red and yellow fall foliage that normally fills the background was subdued by last week’s windstorm, but sufficient color remained to make the day festive. Full Story
Gunflint Hills Golf Club News
The Gunflint Hills Golf Club met September 27 to finalize the 2009 season, to elect new officers for 2010, and have its annual steak fry. President Mark Sandbo presided at the meeting and also cooked the steaks.
