Fire destroys home on County Road 48
At 9:53 p.m. Saturday, October 10, 2009, Carl Foster called the Cook County Law Enforcement Center to report what appeared to be a large fire down the road from him on County Road 48. He called back again one minute later to say that it was a really
big fire.
Indeed it was. A glowing sky and smoke could be seen from just outside the city limits on County Road 7. Full Story
County weighs in on proposed 1% sales tax
City Councilor Jan Sivertson, organizer of the 1% sales tax referendum campaign, and Jim Boyd, champion of the broadband Internet network that would be partly funded from the proposed tax, urged county commissioners Tuesday, October 13, 2009 to let the public know they support the tax. Full Story
Lutsen man charged with armed robbery
Edwin Olaf Vick, 73, of Lutsen, has been charged in connection with the armed robbery that occurred at the Grand Portage Trading Post on October 1, 2009.
Vick was charged in Cook County court on October 14 with aggravated robbery in the first degree, assault in the second degree with a dangerous weapon, and theft of movable property without consent. Full Story

Wins at Two Harbors and tournament for volleyball
On October 6, the Viking Volleyball team traveled to Two Harbors to take on the Two Harbors Agates. The Vikings played kind of sloppy but were able to pull off a win in four games 25-19, 19-25, 25-14 and 25-18. Leading the way for Cook County at Two Harbors was Brea Boomer with 11 kills and a huge 24 digs and Christina Nelson with 13 kills and 14 digs. Essa Jacobsen had 10 kills. Full Story
Exciting football action at Barnum
The Cook County Vikings football team traveled to Barnum on Friday, October 9, to take on the (4-2) Bombers. The Vikings were looking for their first win of the season and played their best game of the year, but unfortunately dropped a hard fought 30-26 decision. Full Story

The Gunflint Trail is no place for the weak at heart. It has a tendency to weed out the softer people who require comforts that simply are not available up here. Don’t get me wrong; I spent many years migrating like the loon. I sometimes still consider following them south again. Full Story
