NS Music Association receives Regional Arts Council grant
A Grand Marais organization is among 12 projects that will receive funding from the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council.
The Council recently awarded grants totaling $40,000 in the ARAC Art Project Grant Program. The funding for these grants is made available through an appropriation from the Minnesota State Legislature. Full Story

The consultant who has created the business plan for a proposed countyowned telephone, TV, and ultrahigh speed Internet fiber optic cable (“broadband”) network is very optimistic about its potential for success. SMMPA board approves rate increase; local effect not known

Hearing scheduled on Judge Magney State Park area survey
A survey of parcels in the Judge Magney State Park area would wrap up some glaring discrepancies from the past, but it could take 200 feet off the edges or corners of some people’s properties. County surveyor Wayne Hensche asked the county board Tuesday, October 13, 2009 to schedule a public hearing to discuss the possibility of a new survey of the area. Full Story
WTIP sends out new signal
On Friday, October 9 at 8:19 a.m., WTIP North Shore Community Radio launched a new signal, WGPO 90.1 FM, in Grand Portage. Approval for building the transmitter was granted by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) last fall. Full Story
City to charge Community Center and school for water
For the first time ever, the City of Grand Marais is going to start charging the Cook County Community Center for the water it uses, including the flooding of the hockey, skating, and curling rinks. Full Story

Playhouse’s silent auction set for October 24
The Grand Marais Playhouse will hold a huge silent auction at 6 p.m. October 24 to raise funds for its 40th season at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts.

Northeastern Minnesotans for Wilderness annual meeting
Northeastern Minnesotans for Wilderness (NMW) will hold its annual meeting at Split Rock Lighthouse State Park, in the Trail Center picnic shelter, on Sunday, October 18 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
NMW Vice-Chair Sally Nankivell of Grand Marais said, “We would love to have a good turnout from Cook County. We would like to receive input from the Cook County community.” Full Story
Arrowhead Coalition to hold annual meeting
Members of the Arrowhead Coalition for Multiple Use (ACMU), a grassroots group formed to “promote sensible management and recreational use of our public lands and waters,” sought to demonstrate its mission in the 2009 Grand Marais Fisherman’s Picnic parade. ACMU members marched behind a banner, calling on Northland forest users to “Respect Your Neighbor.” Full Story
Woodland Workshop offered in Hovland
The University of Minnesota, the Northeast Minnesota Sustainable Development Partnership, and the Flute Reed Partnership are hosting a Woodland Workshop which will provide information for landowners interested in property tax reductions to protect forested property.
