Reminder for letters: Letters to the editor, columns, and cartoons are all the opinions of the contributors
and not necessarily the Cook County News-Herald. While we encourage readers
to submit letters to the editor on issues they feel strongly about, we ask that
letters include name, address, and phone number. The Cook County News-Herald may withhold a name to protect a letter writer, but will never run a letter
without knowing the identity of the author. Anonymous submissions or letters of
questionable credibility will not be published or acknowledged.
The Cook County News-Herald also asks that letters be no longer than 350 words,
however at the editor’s discretion, longer submissions may be published. All
letters are subject to editing for length, clarity, and libelous content.

Sales tax will bring many benefits
I will support reinstating the 1% sales tax and creating a local telephone exchange (otherwise known as the "broadband initiative") for Cook County with my vote this November. You should too. Not because people who write letters in the paper want you to. Because this revenue for our economy will directly benefit you. Full Story
Don’t spend taxes on broadband
The example the proponents of the broadband initiative are using is a $600,000 price tag from a local provider on a fiber link to Cascade Lodge. Full Story
Vote yes for healthy economy
Building a broadband communications network using superior fiber optic technology is imperative to having a healthy and competitive economy in the future. Our work environment is changing as we move into this century. Cook County residents have seen traditional jobs in logging and fishing replaced by jobs in the tourism industry. Full Story
Bear baiting not magic
In response to the letter from Elayne Robinson about bear baiting—the bear facts.
Bear hunting is a vital part of the checks and balances of nature. If it were not for bear hunting, the bear population would explode, becoming a problem for all creatures great and small. Man is the only predator (yes, we are predators) that the bears have in the wild. Full Story
