Bakk visits North Shore with jobs message
Senator Tom Bakk visited the North Shore a year ago, announcing his gubernatorial campaign and delivering bumper stickers declaring “Tom Bakk—Minnesota’s Next Governor.” He returned on Tuesday, October 27 with a new bumper sticker bearing the message that Bakk believes will get him elected in 2010—and will get the state’s economy back on track. Election: sales tax yes, telephone system no
Thevotes in the 2009 election referendum have been tallied and the question of whether or not Cook County should enact a countywide 1% sales tax has been answered by voters, as has the second referendum question, asking if the county should establish a telecommunications system. The first question passed; the second failed. Full Story

Uprooted!
The path suddenly disappeared as I hiked up our spur from WindCradle to the Superior Hiking Trail. Where I had painstakingly cleared, spread sawdust, laid down birch edges…. nothing but a bunch of branches, twenty feet high. I scrambled around and found that a huge poplar had gone down lengthwise over the path, bringing down four or five other large trees. Full Story

Viking volleyball advances in playoffs
With the Cook County Vikings volleyball team getting a No. 1 seed in the Section 7A playoffs, they had a first-round bye. In the second round of playoff action, the Vikings hosted the No. 8 seed Cotton Cardinals on Wednesday, October 28. The Cardinals had defeated No. 9 seed Tower-Soudan to advance to round two against Cook County. Full Story
Two quarters for Paul
It seems that our basement at home has become a glorified football field lately. All three of our boys have this insatiable desire to play catch, tackle, or any other kind of football they can think of. It has become more and more competitive as Adam (seven years old), Jacob (six years old), and Paul (four years old) constantly want my attention when I get home. Full Story
Almost a perfect run
We don’t believe there is such thing as a perfect race, and certainly not a perfect team race, but the Viking cross country team came about as close to perfect as they could at last week’s Section 7A meet in Cloquet. Full Story
