Honoring veterans, past and present
Under solemn gray skies, the Grand Portage Community gathered to honor our nation’s veterans on Wednesday, November 11, 2009, at the Grand Portage Veterans Memorial. Before the ceremony on the hill overlooking Lake Superior, veterans talked quietly, reading names on the memorial brick walkway and remembering those not in attendance this year. Full Story

Public hearing on septic system ordinance
A public hearing on the proposed Cook County Subsurface Sewage Treatment System Ordinance will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday, November 18 at the Cook County courthouse. The ordinance addresses requirements that, if adopted, would affect all Cook County property owners not utilizing municipal sewer systems. Full Story

After the paper went to press last week, we heard the horrific news about the shootings at Fort Hood, Texas on November 5. Any mass shooting anywhere is disturbing, but as someone who lived on or near military bases for twenty-plus years, my heart goes out to the people who live and work on Fort Hood. Full Story

Runners close season at State Meet
The Viking cross country team headed down to the Minnesota State championship meet at St. Olaf College in Northfield with lots of enthusiasm after a big send-off at school, well wishes from local fans and a couple of neat good luck signs at businesses in Two Harbors. The power of role models
I wonder if professional athletes have any clue about the power they have as role models in a young person’s life. More importantly, I wonder how many parents realize that their kids are watching their every move and that the saying, “Do as I say, not as I do” is absolutely ridiculous. In today’s world especially, actions always speak louder than words. Full Story
