Honoring veterans, past and present
Under solemn gray skies, the Grand Portage Community gathered to honor our nation’s veterans on Wednesday, November 11, 2009, at the Grand Portage Veterans Memorial. Before the ceremony on the hill overlooking Lake Superior, veterans talked quietly, reading names on the memorial brick walkway and remembering those not in attendance this year. Full Story
City debates burning question
Grand Marais city councilors are still wondering about the future of the city’s burn pile following some recent complaints about smoke, and a visit from the DNR regarding an accumulation of “inappropriate” materials at the site. Full Story
Public hearing on septic system ordinance
A public hearing on the proposed Cook County Subsurface Sewage Treatment System Ordinance will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday, November 18 at the Cook County courthouse. The ordinance addresses requirements that, if adopted, would affect all Cook County property owners not utilizing municipal sewer systems. Full Story
Grease fire damages Grand Marais family’s kitchen
At 8:28 p.m. on Saturday, November 7, Cook County Law Enforcement received an emergency 911 call reporting a fire at 116 Third Avenue West. Cook County Ambulance and the Grand Marais Fire Department responded to find that an out-of-control grease fire had been extinguished. Full Story
