Metro area hunters charged with illegal shooting
Three men from the Metro area in a blue Ford extended cab pick-up were spotted allegedly shooting a deer off Devil Track Road at 2:12 p.m. on Sunday, November 8. The reporting party was a neighbor of Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Conservation Officer Darin Fagerman and he reported that the deer was shot at the end of the CO’s driveway. Landlocked property owner seeks access through land trade
Part-time Cook County resident John Scheef has a piece of land he would like to develop, but he can’t get to it. On Tuesday, November 10, 2009 Scheef proposed to the county board that they try to obtain a large piece of U.S. Forest Service property adjacent to his land so the county could grant him access to his property. Spontaneous coal combustion causes fire at Minnesota Power
Schroeder, Tofte, and Silver Bay fire departments as well as the Tofte Rescue Squad and Cook County Ambulance responded to a fire in the coal bunker at Minnesota Power at Taconite Harbor Energy Center Thursday, November 5. The Cook County Sheriff ’s Office received a call at 5:42 a.m., with the caller reporting that the fire was contained but still dangerous. Full Story

A benefit is being planned for John R. “Ivan” Pederson, who was severely injured on Saturday, October 17, by an explosion and fire at his home at 183 County Road 60 in Grand Marais. He remains hospitalized at the Hennepin County Medical Center burn center. Full Story
County-U.S. Forest Service culvert project to improve fish passageways
For an outlay of $5,000 and 60 hours of staff time, the county will be receiving about $70,000 from the U.S. Forest Service toward the installation of culverts intended to improve passageways for fish. Full Story

County board votes to proceed with Magney area survey
Thetrue boundaries of properties comprising 10 square miles in and around Judge Magney State Park are currently unknown, but county surveyor Wayne Hensche wants to find them. Ten East End property owners along with numerous county staff attended a public hearing Tuesday, November 10, 2009 regarding the possibility of the county authorizing a survey of the entire tract. 1% passage brings discussion of county administrator position
A “triple play” may not be possible, but the game isn’t over yet.
