Runners close season at State Meet
The Viking cross country team headed down to the Minnesota State championship meet at St. Olaf College in Northfield with lots of enthusiasm after a big send-off at school, well wishes from local fans and a couple of neat good luck signs at businesses in Two Harbors. I wonder if professional athletes have any clue about the power they have as role models in a young person’s life. More importantly, I wonder how many parents realize that their kids are watching their every move and that the saying, “Do as I say, not as I do” is absolutely ridiculous. Volleyball season ends in hard-fought playoff game
On November 4, the Viking volleyball team traveled back to Hermantown to continue Section 7A playoff action. Their opponent was the Spartans from Nashwauk-Keewatin.
Both Sammy Jacobsen and Essa Jacobsen were back in the lineup for this match. Essa got the green light from her doctor to play at just 3:30 that afternoon, just two weeks after having knee surgery. Full Story
Cochrane competes in NCAA soccer playoffs
Maddy Cochrane, a 2006 graduate of Cook County High School who played club soccer through high school, has continued her soccer career on a college level. She is senior co-captain of the Macalester College Scots. The Scots have been selected as an at-large team to the 63-team NCAA Division III women’s soccer championship playoffs. Full Story

Early deer season report
At the end of the first week of deer hunting season, Buck’s Hardware in Grand Marais had registered 187 deer. Minnesota DNR Assistant Wildlife Manager Dave Ingebrigtsen said that is down from last year’s count of 216 in 2008. At press time the leader in Buck’s Big Buck Contest is Paul Swearingen of Buffalo, Minnesota. Full Story
