A question that Mary Sanders, Cook County’s Salvation Army kettle-campaign coordinator, has been hearing is, “How do we donate by check if we want the gift to be used locally?” This question arises especially when the donor receives a mailed solicitation from the Salvation Army office in the Twin Cities. Final levy for city includes 3% increase
At the Wednesday, December 9, meeting, the Grand Marais City Council had an in-depth discussion of the list of priorities it adopted in 2009 and how those priorities can be addressed in light of anticipated cuts to local government aid (LGA). Concerns about the loss of LGA led to a 3% increase in the city’s levy for 2010 for a total levy of $802,657.39. Full Story

Candidates sought for city boards, commissions
Candidates are being sought for a number of city boards and commissions for the City of Grand Marais. At the Wednesday, December 9 Grand Marais City Council meeting, City Administrator Mike Roth told the council he would place an advertisement for the positions but suggested that councilors talk to citizens who may be interested. Caution—thin ice!
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is warning parents to caution their children to stay off the thin ice that is now forming.
According to the DNR as of December 7, no ice in the state is consistently four inches thick, which is the minimum recommended to support the weight of a person. Full Story
MnDOT launches new travel information site
Last summer, the Minnesota Department of Transportation launched a new 511 Traveler Information Web site at www.511mn.org. And this winter, travelers are encouraged to use a new feature on the site. Full Story
North Shore Dragon Boat Festival welcomes new director
Although North Shore residents are perhaps more interested in ice fishing than dragon boating, the North Shore Dragon Boat Festival has exciting news. The festival has announced the selection of Sherri Moe as the new Dragon Boat director. Moe is taking over for Debbie Neitzke, who stepped down after this year’s festival to free up more time for her family. Full Story
Community collaborates on health improvement program
Local nurses Kristin DeArruda Wharton, Joni Kristenson and Teresa Borak are very excited about Cook County’s involvement in a nation-leading effort to reduce chronic disease. The nurses, from School District 166, Cook County Public Health and Human Services, and the Sawtooth Mountain Clinic, are launching the Statewide Health Improvement Program (SHIP) in Cook County. Let the skating begin!
TheCook County Community Center outdoor ice skating rinks will be officially open starting Saturday, December 19 at noon. There is no charge to skate on the outdoor ice rinks.
Two rinks will be flooded again this year, a larger rink with hockey boards that can be scheduled for community groups and a small rink above that is always available for recreational ice skating. Full Story
