Christmas Bird Count complete
The 2009 Audubon Christmas Bird Count took place in Grand Marais last week, with 12 drivers and hikers and six feeder watchers heading out in the wind on Saturday, December 19, the primary counting day. Counters gathered at Neptune’s Cyber Café over coffee and cocoa to compile results on Saturday afternoon. Full Story
Lake Superior Trading Post honors Hagen
At the beginning of December, the Lake Superior Trading Post in Grand Marais announced a special promotion. The Trading Post asked for nominations of exemplary community members—one lucky person was to receive a Frasier Fir gift basket from The Thymes Company, a $100 value. Courthouse exterior needs repair
Theexterior of the courthouse is in need of repair, Maintenance Director Brian Silence reported to the county board in November 2009. The material used on the surface is good for only 12-14 years before cracks start to form. Water gets into the cracks, freezes, and then creates holes, Silence said, something he already sees happening. Full Story

Jail inspection calls for procedural improvements
Upgrades to the Cook County Law Enforcement Center’s heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system are paying off, Sheriff Mark Falk reported to the county board Tuesday, November 24. The project has reduced propane use “drastically,” he said. Full Story
IRRB funding for Lutsen projects

Lutsen Town Supervisor Diane Parker reported to the town board Tuesday, December 15, 2009 that the work on .4 miles of the Lutsen ski hill road (County Road 5) passed inspection by District State Aid Engineer Walter Leu. Lutsen has received $350,000 that it will pass along to the county from the Iron Range Resources Board (IRRB) for project expenses. Full Story

After the third quarter of 2009, all three Cook County tourism associations had lost ground on 3% lodging tax income from last year at the same time. Full Story
Tofte to calculate rescue squad costs
“ I definitely think we’re getting our money’s worth. ”
The cost of shared emergency rescue squad services was discussed again at the December 10, 2009 Tofte town meeting. Town Clerk Barb Gervais reported that the Schroeder town board wants to see a breakdown of costs before it signs a new contract with Tofte for the services of its rescue squad. Tofte had asked for an increase in its contract, which expires December 31, 2009. Full Story

County commissioner opposes conditional use permit

Community Emergency Response Team training will begin in Cook County on January 19, 2010, said Emergency Management Director, Jim Wiinanen. “CERT is about readiness, people helping people, rescuer safety, and doing the greatest good for the greatest number.” Full Story
