Vikings’ play improves in tough back-to-back games
The Cook County boys’ basketball team finished off the month of December with tough back-to-back games before the Christmas break. On Monday, December 21, the Vikings came up short in a tightly contested game that was closer than the 44-61 score indicated. Full Story

When alumni return
Before taking a week off during Christmas break, we had a special moment at our final basketball practice. Some of our former players came back to scrimmage this year’s squad. Football champ has Lutsen grandparents
Gayle and John Lyght of Lutsen are the proud grandparents of Christopher Luchies,
a member of the Brooks Composite High Buffalos football team. The Buffalos, of Brooks, Alberta, captured the Tier 3 Canadian Provincial Football title by completing an undefeated season with a 23-7 win over the Peace River Pioneers in the championship game in November. Full Story
Vikings crush Rangers & Mariners
Improve overall record to 5-0
The Cook County girls’ basketball team improved its overall season record to 5-0 with a 66-33 road win in Mountain Iron and a 77-16 win over Silver Bay at home. The extremely athletic and talented Vikings have overwhelmed their opponents this season with a combination of great defense and fast-paced offense. Full Story
Silver Bay squirt hockey welcomes Cook County players
The squirt hockey team in Silver Bay started off the 2009-2010 season with a 2-0 win on Saturday, November 21 against Ashland, WI.
On Sunday, November 22 they played Hermantown and tied the game 2-2. Full Story

Snowmobile trails are good
We got a late start on our trip to Iowa for the holidays and ended up driving through some pretty bad weather. The ride to Minneapolis was nice, but the last leg of the trip into Iowa was much worse. They had temperatures in the low teens compared to 30 degrees in Minneapolis. We had ice and wind for a couple of hours and we saw a few cars end up in the salad. Full Story

Bearskin Lodge
“Here in the tip of the Arrowhead region, we didn’t receive nearly as much snow as some areas to the south of us,” reported Bearskin’s updated Web site Dec. 26. “We honestly would have liked to receive more. And of course, we will.” Bearskin staff expects to have much of its system fully groomed by the beginning of the week. Full Story

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Snowmobile Safety Class was held during November and December with field-testing on Saturday, December 12. Full Story
Fish shelter identification required
Minnesota conservation officers want to remind ice anglers and others that all shelters placed on the ice of Minnesota waters must have either the complete name and address, driver’s license number, or the nine-digit DNR number on the license of the owner plainly and legibly displayed on the outside in letters and figures at least two inches in height. New winter lake trout season dates for 2010
Winter season for lake trout on all lakes located entirely within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW), will open Friday, Jan. 1 and close Wednesday, March 31, 2010, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Full Story
