Mayor sees 2009 as a good year

Grand Marais Mayor Sue Hakes told City Council Dec. 30 that she believes a lot was accomplished during the past 12 months.

Work to begin on Arrowhead Trail bridge
Work is scheduled to begin on the Pine River bridge on the Arrowhead Trail (County Road 74) on Wednesday, January 13. The bridge over the Pine River, which flows between McFarland and Little John lakes, was restricted to vehicle weights of five tons in September 2009 due to concerns about the aging bridge. Three Vikings make All-Tournament Team
Vikings take second place in Walker Christmas Tournament
The Cook County girls’ basketball team entered the holiday season with a perfect 5-0 season record. Head Coach T.J. Super was looking for a tough test with stiffer competition and entered the Vikings into the Walker Christmas basketball tournament. Full Story
Mites 2 travel to tournaments
In its first tournament of the year, the Cook County Hockey Mite 2 team traveled to Cloquet on Dec. 19 and 20 to play in an eight-team event.
The Mite 2s, coached by Paul Sporn and Steve DuChien, played three games against Cloquet Purple, Carlton and Cloquet Gold. Even though the team was 0-3 for the tournament, the games were hard fought and played well by all. Full Story
