Lady Knights & Wrens overwhelmed
Following a tough loss on the road to Floodwood last week, the Vikings responded with a vengeance, as they completely overwhelmed the Babbitt Lady Knights and Wrenshall Wrens in backto back blowout wins. On Thursday, January 28, the Vikings traveled to Babbitt where they came away with a 75-27 win. Thenext night, Cook County played at home and dismantled the Wrenshall Wrens, 74-23. Full Story
A Super Bowl Bummer
Usually, I am as excited as anyone for the Super Bowl. We usually have some friends over, cook up some “game food” like burgers, nachos, chicken wings, etc., and then sit back to enjoy the greatest game on earth. Full Story
Number 18 and The Posse at Pincushion
Over 300 skiers from the Arrowhead region filled the trails at the Cook County Invitational ski meet at Pincushion Mountain on Friday, January 29. Theday started very cold but the bright sun and calm winds helped make it a great day for skiing—and watching—all the action. Many volunteer hands made for light work in jobs ranging from concessions to timing and organizing. Full Story

Vikings’ defense turns up the heat
The Cook County boys’ basketball team played arguably its best basketball of the season last week to improve its overall season record to 6-6. The Vikings beat Babbitt on the road 69-32 before taking on Wrenshall the next night, winning in that contest, 63-56. Full Story

Beargrease on the Trail
At press time, the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon mushers were arriving at the Trail Center checkpoint. Trail Center has provided these mushers and their handlers with very affordable hot meals and free overnight accommodations for quite a few years. They stay open all night so that even the latest arriving racers and handlers can still get dinner and be able to tend to their tired dogs. Full Story
Where are the fish biting?
According to the fishermen stopping by Buck’s Hardware in Grand Marais, walleyes have been found in Cascade Lake in 15 feet of water using a jig and minnow; in Elbow Lake in 8 feet of water off the weed lines using a jig and minnow and in Crescent Lake in 15 feet of water using a jig and minnow. Junior Alpine skiers sensational at Lutsen
The Northland Junior Race Series (NJRS) continued with race No. 4 hosted by Lutsen Mountains on January 31. NJRS participants are Arrowhead Alpine Club, Duluth Alpine Club, Lutsen Mountains Junior Ski Team and Ski Gull Alpine Club. Nearly every Sunday over 100 alpine racers from ages 4-17 compete against each other skiing technically difficult, high-speed slalom and giant slalom courses. Full Story
