Girls' Alpine Vikings advance to State
Larson, Rider qualify as individuals
Throughout the season, the Cook County/Silver Bay girls’ Alpine team has been making noise in the regional race circuit. The girls are strong and they won several meets with numerous top individual performances and plenty of hardware. Theseason’s typical meet consisted of eight to 10 regional teams with 75+ skiers at each meet. Full Story
Nordic Vikings finish season strong
Last Thursday, February 4, a small group of dedicated Nordic skiers headed off to Giants Ridge in Biwabik to compete in the Section 7 Nordic Ski Meet. This was the second trip to sections for varsity skiers Kieran Scannell and Shelby Ahrendt. Newcomers included Ben Seaton, Alex Ditmanson and Audrey Summers. You could sense that all of these kids were proud to be there representing their team. Full Story
Vikings polish off Agates, nipped by Timberwolves
The Cook County boys’ basketball team split in its back-to-back contests this past weekend to bring their overall season record to 7-7. On Friday, February 5, the Vikings beat the Two Harbors Agates 56-48 at home. On the following day, Cook County’s shooting woes cost them a victory, as Ely upended the Vikings, 34-41. Full Story
Vikings win fourth straight Overall record now 17-2
The Cook County girls’ basketball team won backto back games against Two Harbors and Ely to improve its overall season record to 17-2. On Friday, February 5, the Vikings blew open a closely contested first half by outscoring the Two Harbors’ Agates 34-24 in the second half to win, 65-45. The next day, Cook County beat the Timberwolves of Ely, 74-40. Full Story
Trophy laker on Saganaga
The lake trout bite has been a little off this week. Saganaga has had the best reports for both action and size. I spent Saturday on Gunflint Lake with four anglers and only managed to find a couple of fish. Pretty slow in my book, but some other fishermen I spoke with were having even worse luck. Canada is now open and a lot of anglers have been fishing the Canadian side of Sag. Full Story
Trail Cook County Conditions
Sugarbush Trail Association
All primary trails were rolled Feb. 9 and the Pisten Bully was out the next day, setting track and skating lane. Packed base is 10 inches, aided by 8 to 10 inches of new snow during the past week. Mites solid on outdoor ice at Woodland Glen Avon Tournament
Cook County Hockey players made their presence known in Duluth this past weekend at the Woodland Glen Avon Tournament. The games were played at outdoor rinks so Cook County players felt right at home. Both the M-1 and M-2 teams were generously sponsored by Grand Portage Casino. Full Story
Bantams skate away with tournament victory
The Silver Bay Bantams took advantage of solid goaltending and timely scoring to skate away with the championship trophy in their home tournament the weekend of February 5 - 7. Theeight-team tournament featured Twin Cities teams from Centennial and Osseo-Maple Grove, in addition to familiar teams from northern Minnesota. Full Story
