Sentence to Serve crews productive last fall
Cook County’s adult Sentence to Serve crew contributed 608 hours of labor in the last quarter of 2009, and its juvenile crew contributed 52 hours. The estimated market value of this work was $9,990. One hundred and one jail days were saved through this program. At $52 a day, that totals $5,252 in savings. Full Story

The Grand Marais Municipal Pool is a great place to spend time with other community members while doing something good for your body. Senior Center Director Bev Green and chef Rebecca Thompson are creating another way to do the same thing at the Senior Center. Gravel pit owner cleaning up garbage dumped by others
Sometimes explaining yourself in a letter can bring positive results.
In December the county board postponed renewing a gravel pit permit for Dean Berglund because he had not removed non-combustible materials from the pit as required after the previous year’s inspection. More noncombustibles, in fact, had been added. Full Story

Snowbirds “count” for Minnesota 2010 Census
Minnesota residents who head south during the cold months or “snowbirds” may not be sure about when—and where— they should complete their Census 2010 questionnaire. The Minnesota State Demographic Center recommends that Minnesota residents who reside out of state for the winter months answer only

If the state offered to buy a large chunk of private land and a county could choose either getting a lump sum worth about 25 years of what would otherwise have been paid in private property taxes or being paid annually – in perpetuity – something in lieu of but not as much as what would have been paid in private property taxes, which should it choose?
