Anders Zimmer competes in Michigan event
Anders Zimmer,
14, of Grand Marais, has been selected to once again compete for a spot on the U.S. Junior Olympic National team. At press time, Anders was heading to competition in Marquette, Michigan Feb. 17-20. Full Story
Vikings’ winning streak stretches to seven
Overall record now 20-2
The Cook County girls’ basketball team won three games in four days last week to improve its overall season record to 20-2. With three wins over Albrook, Duluth Marshall, and McGregor, the Vikings could lock up the number-one seed in the southern half of Section 7A with a strong finish in the final two weeks of the season. Vikings lose overtime thriller in Albrook
The Cook County boys’ basketball team lost in two tough road games last week to bring their overall season record to 7-9. On Tuesday, February 9, the Vikings lost 70-71 in a heartbreaking overtime loss against the Albrook Falcons. Three days later the Vikings were outplayed by the McGregor Mercuries, 57-66, for their second road loss of the week. Full Story

It has been a pretty mild winter so far with very few good snowstorms. We received about three inches this week and it has been just enough to keep the trails in good shape. Full Story

Banadad Ski Trails
Skiing is good to excellent, but there is still some brush on the trail from trail clearing following the ice storm. Great snow conditions! There is 25 inches of snow on the ground, with a packed trail base of 16 inches. There has been no substantial new snow during the past week. Where are the fish biting?
John at Buck’s Hardware has heard from a number of lake trout fishermen who have had good luck on Seagull Lake in 50 feet of water in the 35 feet depth range using ciscoes and chubs and on Greenwood Lake in 70 feet of water fishing 50 feet down using chubs on tip-ups. Full Story
Tough competition for junior racers at Spirit Mountain
Race five of the Northland Junior Race Series was held at Spirit Mountain on Sunday, February 7. Twenty-three racers from the Lutsen Mountains Junior Ski Team skied one run of giant slalom and one run of slalom. They raced in a field of 115 area skiers on two fast and icy courses set by Team Duluth. Racers under eight skied two runs of giant slalom. Full Story

Minnesota’s state forest nurseries have more than 25 species of evergreens, deciduous trees and shrubs available for purchase. Seedlings are sold in orders of 500 or more, although purchases may be broken down into increments of 100 of a species. Prices for 500 seedlings run from $90 to $470.
