Building community through shared garden
Three guests attended the February 2, 2010 Grand Marais Park Board meeting to ask for space in the rec park for a community garden similar to the one created at WTIP Radio last summer. Melinda Spinler of the Northwoods Food Project said some people in Grand Marais have no space to grow their own food, an endeavor that enhances both nutrition and mental health. Full Story

Grand Portage death ruled suicide
On December 14, 2009, James Bernard Smith, 41, of Grand Portage, was found dead, the apparent victim of hanging. Thisweek Cook County Sheriff Mark Falk released autopsy information from the Lake County Medical Examiner, confirming that the cause of death was suicidal hanging with associated injuries. Full Story
Lutsen man sentenced for meth ring connection
On February 18, 2010, a summary of sentencing in a criminal case involving 28 defendants, including Kirk Paul Johnson, 57, of Lutsen, was released by the U.S. Department of Justice. According to United States Attorney B. Todd Jones, the defendants in this case were collectively responsible for distributing between 30 and 50 pounds of methamphetamine in the Duluth area from 2005 to 2008. Full Story
Invasives Team unites against noxious weeds and pests
Cook County has officially joined an interagency fight against “invasive terrestrial, aquatic, and airborne species,” and in the hope of receiving up to $100,000 in federal Environmental Protection Agency funding, it may partner with Lake and St. Louis counties as well. Full Story
Hazardous tree removal along Gunflint Trail begins March 23
TIMMBERRR!
Motorists traveling along the Gunflint Trail and on several side roads near Seagull Lake are advised that contract equipment will be working in the road right-of-way to remove trees killed as a result of the Ham Lake Fire beginning March 23. The U.S. Forest Service has announced that crews will be working at various locations along the route for three to five weeks. Full Story

Around a hundred people gathered Monday, February 15 at the North House Folk School for an evening organized by Spirit of the Wilderness Episcopal Church. One end of the room was an array of potluck items, including old favorites, like Tater-Tot hot dish and slow baked beans. Full Story

After a shocking December 9, 2009 diagnosis of breast cancer, Jenny Atkinson, 36, of Clearwater Lake immediately put on her rally cap just as she has in difficult situations before. She consulted with a great team of doctors, set out a treatment plan, and started chemotherapy just four days after celebrating her first Christmas as a mother. Full Story
