Vikings clip Wrens, fall to Eskimos
The Cook County girls’ basketball team won one of its two Polar League Conference match-ups last week to bring its overall season record to 21-3. On Tuesday, February 16, the Vikings beat the overmatched Wrenshall Wrens, 79-12. On Friday, the Vikings traveled to Esko and lost to the 18-4 Eskimos, 45-54. Full Story

Most people who know me know that I am not as obsessed with cell phones as the rest of the world. I find the dang things to be rude, impersonal, and downright annoying. Trout Derby
ThisSunday, February 28, the Trout Derby hosted by the Ridge Riders Snowmobile Club will be held on Gunflint Lake. The actual contest goes from 9:00 – 12:00 and there is a raffle for all the members who show up. I am told that everyone usually wins a prize and it is a really good time. Thebiggest trout caught during this three-hour event wins the grand prize. Full Story

Fishermen have been quiet at Mike’s Holiday in Grand Marais. Tim at Holiday could only provide a report for Lake Saganaga, where the lake trout are biting in about 38 – 40 feet on whole ciscoes and artificial lures. Full Story

Nine junior skiers make the podium at Mont Du Lac
The Northland Junior Race Series continued on Sunday, February 21 at Mont Du Lac. The Lutsen Mountains Junior Ski team had 21 racers who skied two runs of slalom and four racers under the age of eight who skied two runs of giant slalom in a field of 106 area athletes. Sunny skies, no wind and temperatures reaching 40 degrees made for a perfect day of alpine ski racing. Full Story
Anders Zimmer medals in Michigan—makes National Junior Team
Anders Zimmer,
14, of Grand Marais has been named to the U.S. Junior National Alpine Team after qualifying in Marquette, Michigan this past week, where he competed against the best 90 racers from 10 other states. While in Michigan Anders competed in the slalom, giant slalom and downhill, earning enough points to make the team. Full Story
