Lynx encounter on Banadad Trail
Faris and Bonnie Keeling of Duluth had an adventure many northlanders can only imagine—an encounter with a Canada lynx. The Keelings spent the weekend on the Banadad Trail where they said they enjoyed “blue sky, sunny days, and clear, starry nights and skiing and snowshoeing.” However, the highlight of the trip was seeing the lynx. Three Arrowhead director positions open
The grassroots participation in nominating and electing directors is one of the most important powers that members have in controlling a cooperative. Arrowhead Electric Cooperative, Inc. (AECI) is seeking three people to run for its board of directors. Candidates are being sought for threeyear terms in District 3 (Gunflint Trail), District 6 (Lutsen), and District 7 (Tofte). The Cook County Local Energy Project (CCLEP) will celebrate its second birthday later this spring, and like a baby moose, it got up on its legs very quickly. With five working groups, it has accomplished a lot, but co-founder George Wilkes would like to see it gain momentum. Full Story
County to pursue interoperable communications system
The county board passed a motion on Tuesday, March 9, 2010 indicating its intent to participate in the state’s Allied Radio Matrix for Emergency Response (ARMER) communication system. Funding for the rather expensive changeover will be needed, but it will allow all public safety and governmental agencies to communicate with each other. Full Story
Cuts to Sentence-to-Serve funding?
In an effort to deal with severe budget challenges, the governor’s office has proposed cutting funding for the Sentence-to-Serve (STS) program that puts nonviolent offenders to work on community projects as an alternative to serving time in long-term correctional facilities. Full Story
G&G Septic purchases Cedar Grove Business Park lot
In a public hearing lasting no more than 10 minutes, the Cook County- Grand Marais Economic Development Authority (EDA) agreed to sell Cedar Grove Business Park lot 3, block 7, to Pete Gresczyk of G&G Septic. Full Story
County discussing Highway Department sinking fund
The county board is working on setting aside a sinking fund to pay for replacing Highway Department equipment in a systematic way. On Tuesday, March 9, 2010, Maintenance Supervisor Russell Klegstad talked with the board about options for financing capital purchases that have been identified in the Highway Department’s longrange plan. Road ban postpones Highway 61 roadwork
State-mandated road bans went into effect at midnight Tuesday, March 9, 2010. This will postpone KGM Construction’s ability to finish the Highway 61 roadwork between Lutsen and Tofte.
Theroad ban is a little early this year because of all the sunshine and warm weather. Once the ban is in effect, it is on for eight weeks. Full Story
First Nations actor visits, inspires community
The Grand Portage Community welcomed First Nations actor Adam Beach on Tuesday, March 2010. Beach performed for crowd of approximately 150 people at the Grand Portage Community Center at 6:30 p.m. Prior to his evening performance Adam toured the community, met many people living and working in Grand Portage, and made a special visit to the students at Oshki Ogimaag Community School. Dashing through the snow in a two-horse open sleigh
On a starry warm winter night with the moon almost full, a team of Belgian horses trots through the woods of Okontoe, halfway up the Gunflint Trail. The horses do, indeed, know the way to carry the sleigh through the white and drifted snow. Full Story

With ice on the harbor, the North Shore Dragon Boat Festival is excited to announce that registration is underway for this year’s event.

Hovland family supports Chilean rebuilding effort
When news spread that an 8.8 magnitude earthquake had struck central Chile on Feb. 27, 2010 at 3:34 AM (local time), the thoughts of the Danfelt-Martin family in Hovland immediately went to the friends Gwen Danfelt-Martin had made during her time there as a Rotary Exchange Student in 2004 – 2005.
