Vikings ousted by Spartans in Section 7A Semifinals—
finish season with 23-5 record
On Wednesday, March 10, the Cook County girls’ basketball team took on the Nashwauk- Keewatin Spartans in the Section 7A Semifinals at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. The Vikings had a tough time in the final minutes against the senior-laden Spartans, losing a closely contested game, 53-61. Nashwauk would go on to win the Section 7A championship. Full Story
Mariners sink Vikings in playoffs
The Cook County boys’ basketball team lost its second round playoff game to the Silver Bay Mariners, 46-50. On Thursday, March 11 in Esko, the Vikings couldn’t match the Mariners’ intensity in the final minutes, losing a closely contested game to bring the Vikings’ overall season record to 8-13. Full Story

After the girls’ basketball season came to a close, I had a chance to sit down and talk with senior basketball standout Essa Jacobsen. I had Jacobsen in class as a freshman in World Geography, and now I have her again as a senior in Economics and Government. Full Story

Flooded lakes
The economy is not my field of expertise, but it seems like things are at least starting to move in the right direction. The guiding calendar for the summer is beginning to take shape and it looks like this could be a much better summer than the previous two. I have not talked to many lodge owners, but if I am getting a lot of bookings already, they must be too. Full Story

Where are the fish biting?
Although the ice on area lakes is melting
fast, fishermen reported some success this
week. John at Buck’s Hardware said there
are reports of walleye biting on South
Fowl Lake in 6 – 8 feet of water using a jig
and minnow by the falls.

Fantastic finish for Team Lutsen
The championship and final race of the Northland Junior Race Series (NJRS) was held at Ski Gull Recreation Area in Brainerd on Sunday, March 7. Racers eight and over skied one run of giant slalom and one run of slalom; racers under eight skied two runs of giant slalom. Full Story
A great season finale for Mites
Congratulations to the Cook County Hockey Mite 1 players on a great event played in Silver Bay the weekend of March 12 - 13.
It was a great way to end the season with three games against teams from Proctor, Duluth Heights and Two Harbors. These half-ice events are fun, fast and are great skill builders for the youngest players of Cook County Hockey. Full Story
