Smith sentenced in check theft case
Kim Smith of Grand Marais, 43, pled guilty March 9, 2010 at the Cook County courthouse to four felony counts of theft by check and reappeared in court on April 7 for sentencing. Each count carried a maximum sentence of 10 years and/or a $20,000 fine, however the sentence Smith received was much less severe. Four other counts of theft by check were dismissed. Full Story
Cook County census response is slow
Compared to the rest of the state and the nation, Cook County is lagging behind in responding to the 2010 Census. The national return rate is 63%. The state of Minnesota is responding a little bit better. The Minnesota response rate is 72%. However, Cook County is far behind with a response rate of only 37%. Full Story
Bakk authors jobs bill
A comprehensive jobs package with the potential to create up to 20,000 new jobs in Minnesota and encourage investment and jobs in start-up companies, historic building renovations, and an expanded Mall of America, passed the House and Senate on March 29, said state Sen. Tom Bakk, DFL-Cook, Senate Tax chair and chief author and architect of the legislation. Full Story

Bikes sought to help summer workers
First Congregational Church would like to help improve the experience of the international workers in Grand Marais this summer.
Transportation is a problem for many of them, so the church is looking to loan them bicycles, and is seeking donations of bicycles that are in good mechanical condition or that only need minor repairs. Full Story
Park board sets 2010 priorities
Grand Marais park board members set their list of 2010 priorities during the April 6 meeting at the Rec Park. The list, which includes six projects, will be forwarded to city council for further consideration, but is dependent on available funding and requests from other city departments. Full Story
Farmers Market expansion gets ok
Grand Marais city councilors said they have no problem with granting an expansion for the popular Farmer’s Market, which is held Saturday mornings through the summer in the city’s parking lot off Broadway. Full Story
Grand Portage to receive energy solutions funding
The Minnesota Chippewa Tribe has been awarded over $700,000 to help six reservations reduce energy use and create green jobs, and Grand Portage Tribal Council Executive Assistant Dana Logan said Grand Portage would be receiving approximately $50,000. Full Story
Lutsen hears rezoning request
With Supervisor Marland Hansen absent on vacation and Treasurer John Groth, Fire Chief Paul Goettl, and EMS Chief Fred Schmidt at firefighter training, the March 16, 2010 Lutsen town meeting went fairly quickly. The remaining board discussed a possible zoning change, community financial donations, and the generous donation of a U.S. flag. Full Story

Churches collaborate on chili feed
Bethlehem Lutheran Church and the Evangelical Free Church are partnering to hold a chili cook-off at Bethlehem Lutheran Church from noon to 2 p.m. on April 24.

Earth Day harbor clean up plans being set
Once again, the Grand Marais harbor will be the site of a clean-up effort on Earth Day.
Organizer Jim Shinners said he hopes to accomplish three goals: Recognize and honor Earth Day, and all that it represents; clean up the Grand Marais harbor area; and demonstrate that various organizations and entities can come together cooperatively to achieve a worthwhile goal. Full Story

The Cook County Soil and Water Conservation District has order forms available for native trees and shrubs. Also new this year are native grass and wildflower seed mixes.
