Smoke hung over the city of Grand Marais on Saturday, April 10, 2010 as invaluable live burn training for firefighters took place at a home at 406 First Avenue East from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Theplan of firefighters and instructors was to conduct training while burning the house to the ground. School science project causes school evacuation
A science experiment resulted in the evacuation of the Grand Marais campus of School District 166 on Tuesday, April 13. At 2:04 p.m., Cook County Law Enforcement received an automated alarm from the school at 101 West 5th Street reporting a general fire alarm. Full Story
Moisture content in forest at record low– fire danger high
With low snowfall over the winter and a warm, dry spring, fire danger becoming very high. Superior National Forest District Ranger Dennis Neitzke reported to the Cook County Board of Commissioners Tuesday, April 13, 2010 that moisture content in the largest forest fire fuel – dead wood – is at a record low. Politics of trash
Since 2004, I have been part of an Adopt-a-Highway cleanup crew on a section of Highway 61 just west of Hovland. We have learned that it is nice to do the first cleanup as early as possible each spring—after the snow is gone, but before the grass grows up and hides trash. I don’t think we have ever conducted our cleanup before Earth Day (April 22) before this year. Full Story

Vikings split in opening week of play
The Cook County softball team started the season on the road in Cromwell on Thursday, April 8. After a decisive 19-2 win on Thursday, the Vikings played the next day at home against the Two Harbors Agates. Playing on little rest, Cook County lost to the Agates 2-14. Full Story
One Crazy Spring
My transition from winter to spring has been especially crazy this year. It must have something to do with the early spring weather we have had. It is either the good weather, or I have been too busy to notice that it is already time for baseball and softball games! Full Story
Vikings win first two on the diamond
The Cook County baseball team started the season with impressive back-to-back wins over Polar League opponents Cromwell and Two Harbors this past week. On Thursday April 8, the Vikings traveled to Cromwell and tore up the Cardinals 27-1. In the match-up the next day at home against the Agates, the Vikings won in a closely contested 7-6 contest.
