Charter schools in county remain property tax exempt
Charter schools in Cook County have been exempt from paying property taxes for several years, the result of debate on the state level. A moratorium on taxes for the county’s charter schools was set under former Cook County Assessor Ted Mershon as the state tried to decide the status of charter schools and property taxes. Full Story

Sliding scale for health care
The Sawtooth Mountain Clinic continues to offer a sliding scale payment plan for its patients. Suzanne Davies, program coordinator, said the clinic is in its 32nd year of providing the Primary Care Sliding Fee Scale Program. New this year is extended dental and mental health visits with local providers. This program is made possible through a grant from the US Dept. Full Story

The National Association of Resource Conservation and Development Councils (NARC&DC) has announced that Jim Hall of Laurentian Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) Council in Duluth has been inducted into the National Association’s Hall of Fame for his outstanding contributions to the RC&D Program. Gravel roads to receive more calcium chloride this summer
This summer, Cook County gravel roads will receive a 20% increase in calcium chloride application over last year to keep dust down and prevent erosion. Highway Department Maintenance Supervisor Russell Klegstad reworked department expenditures so that 60,000 gallons could be purchased rather than the 50,000 gallons that were budgeted. Full Story
County supports solar panels to generate power for city
The City of Grand Marais might be gaining a new power source with a 10.56-kilowatt solar photovoltaic electrical system at the Gunflint Hills Municipal Golf Course, thanks in part to support from the county. On Tuesday, April 13, 2010, the county board voted to provide a $5,000 match for the $106,686 project, which would be possible through an Iron Range Resources renewable energy grant. Full Story

Electrical transformer leak discovered, cleaned up, in Grand Portage
When Arrowhead Electric Cooperative, Inc. line crews responded to a power outage in Grand Portage on the evening of Sunday, April 11, they found that an electrical transformer on a pole near the Grand Portage Trading Post was damaged and had leaked oil onto the ground. Full Story
Missing Michigan man found dead in Grand Portage
When the 2008 Pontiac Vibe of a missing man from Allouez, Michigan was spotted in the parking lot of the Grand Portage Lodge & Casino on April 13, it was hoped that the mystery of his disappearance would be solved. Unfortunately, later that day, Marvin Leroy Manninen, 66, was found deceased a few miles from the lodge on the shore of Lake Superior. Full Story
County looking ahead to training community in fiber optic applications
Cook County is eligible for up to $100,000 in grants that could help community members learn how to use fiber optic technology that is not even available yet to many Internet users, county information systems director Danna MacKenzie reported to the county board Tuesday, April 13, 2010. Full Story
Property owners given building permit extensions after Ham Lake fire
County Planning Director Tim Nelson went before the county board Tuesday, April 14, 2010 to request that property owners whose cabins had been destroyed in the 2007 Ham Lake fire be given another year to rebuild under non-conforming status. Full Story
ISD 166 adds healthier options to A la Carte
Cook County Schools ISD 166 cafeteria is busy. Nearly 400 children ages 5 to 18 can stream through the “lunch line” for a nutritious meal each school day. Students in middle school (grades 6-8) and high school have the additional option of purchasing food from the “A la carte” line. Full Story
