For the second year in a row, Cook County citizens gathered on the courthouse steps on tax day, April 15, to add their voices to thousands across the nation who spoke up at Tax Day Tea Parties with their opinions on the financial, political, and, to a certain extent, moral direction of America. Housing program gets funding boost
Cook - Lake County Housing Coordinator Nancy Grabko of Community Fundraising Solutions (CFS) had good news for the Cook County-Grand Marais Economic Development Authority (EDA) at its April 13 meeting. A major piece of funding for Cook County housing rehabilitation projects lost in December 2009 had been reinstated. Full Story
Increased fire restrictions April 23
Continued lack of rain, warm temperatures, and wind are creating very high fire danger across northern Minnesota. To reduce the potential for human-caused wildfires, the Forest Service and Department of Natural Resources have increased fire restrictions that will begin on April 23, 2010. Full Story
Perfect Devil’s Kettle weather
The weather the last few weeks has been perfect for hiking. Sunny, but cool. Last Friday I enjoyed a hike along the Brule River in Hovland with my cousins from Washington state, Joel and Lori, daughter-in-law Sara, granddaughter Genevieve and her little friend, Allie. Full Story
Faith in crisis
Annette and John Tibbet and their family made their home in a larger city of the Deep South. Theywere prosperous leaders in the community and regularly attended a local church. Their oldest son Wesley was turning 13 and had planned to enter junior high that fall. But all of the family’s plans were put on hold when 10-year-old Darren was diagnosed with leukemia. Full Story

Vikings lose in Carlton, bounce back to beat Babbitt
The Cook County softball team remained at .500 for the season after splitting a pair of games last week. On Tuesday, April 13 the Vikings lost 1-14 in Carlton. Three days later, Cook County looked recharged as they beat Babbitt 13-3. The Vikings are now 2-2 on the season. Full Story

Groth pitches one-hit shutout
The Cook County Vikings’ baseball team split two games last week to bring its overall season record to 3-1. After a disappointing 5-9 loss in Carlton on Tuesday, April 13, the Vikings had an impressive home performance on Friday, April 16 when they shut out the Babbitt-Embarrass Knights 10-0 in five innings.
